Armed Robbery Suspect Shot By KSP Trooper

LONDON, Ky. (AP) - A state trooper in eastern Kentucky has been placed on paid administrative leave following a shooting incident last night.

Trooper Tony Dingess and McCreary County Sheriff Gus Skinner were responding to a report of an armed robbery when they pulled over a car driven by Mickey Stephens, 31, of Pine Knot, Ky.

Stephens then allegedly walked out of the car and began walking toward the officers, pointing a gun at them in the process. Police said Stephens ignored commands to drop his weapon, and was shot by both Dingess and Skinner. He was airlifted to UK Medical Center for treatment.

Stephens was charged with five counts of wanton endangerment and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

Reading these posts, it appears most folks out there are law abiding citizens who support what these officers had to do. One post talks about goats. Must not be listening to that scanner very close, as that was just 20 minutes prior to an armed robbery at Southway (which may or may not have been the guy shot the next night), and was reported as a traffic hazard. If you want the law to do something about a problem you have with your relative, file paperwork on him. Unless they are breaking the law in their presence, the law can't do anything without a warrant or criminal summons. Did you take out a warrant on him? Never mind, that question has already been answered. NO.

I usually dont get involved in these things but here it goes. To start I feel for the family of this peace of work, but in the end he got exactly what he asked for. As for the lady that stated that he was shot in the back she doesn't know the facts. No one in law enforcement wants to kill or hurt anyone if it isnt warranted. As for the Skinner bashing look at the fisical court and County Judge !!There is the reality of the problem. Skinner is doing the best he can with what they will give him. When your County Judge states that Law enforcement is not a priority something is wrong.

I can tell you that if someone pointed a gun at me I would shoot him also. Our law enforcement and our 911 systems are doing their job well. To law enforcement and 91 I want to say Thank you for taking care of the citizens of this community.

I just wonder if all the people criticizing the police are a bunch of criminals themselves. These officers were only doing their job. I'd rather have a deadbeat repeat criminal injured than an upstanding Police officer. May God Bless you & your family Officer Dingess.

I have known Tony Dingess for years. He is a GREAT trooper. He and Skinner should have shot the man. If you do wrong you should pay. That is what is wrong with America today, let the robbers rob, let mean people use thier families and do wrong. I'm glad they got rid of him and wish a few more druggies would die and this would be a better place to live for the working people whom are trying to do what is right.
