Fire Damages Historical Richard M. Nixon Recreation Center

A fire damages a historical center in Eastern Kentucky.

Officials say the fire started in the mechanical room at the Richard M. Nixon Recreation Center filling the building with smoke.

Seven fire departments were called in to battle the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Staff members rushed to salvage equipment from the building.

"The Nixon Center is a huge part of our community and our country. We have all kinds of major events here and people enjoy and look forward to coming to and it's a landmark here in Leslie County,"

The center made headlines thirty years ago when Former President Richard Nixon made his first public appearance there after his resignation, four years earlier.

You don't see too many Bill Clinton Centers in Kentucky, do you? But Nixon? Sure, why not!

Shouldn't have named it after Nixon. What good could ever come of that? Why would anyone name anything after "Tricky Dick"?

To Warren: I absolutely don't like what you are implying. Yes, there are a lot of fires everywhere in the winter, coal heat is dangerous. For your information, the fire that destroyed the local business was accidental, and as was stated on WYMT the owner has no insurance, he couldn't afford it because of the "weakened economy" as you point out. Furthermore, the Nixon Center fire, as stated on Kentucky.com occurred while electrical work was being done. The people affected by these two tragedies need prayer, not inuendo and speculation ! By the way, the Nixon Center is used as the gym for Leslie Co. Boys and Girls basketball, as the location for the annual Osborne Brothers Festival, and for many other local events. Thanks, John, for asking.

The Richard M. Nixon Center is home of the Leslie County High School Eagles basketball teams. As well, all health and physical education classes are held in the facility as well as various events such as concerts, tournaments both grade school level as well as Regional and District Championship tournaments, cheerleading competitions, as well as plays put on by drama students. The Richard M. Nixon Center is a landmark here for Leslie County and it pains me that this has happened.
