Eastern Kentucky University's Vetarans Affairs department is leading a nationwide effort to remember veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice. After a grass roots effort started at EKU, 183 campuses across the country are reading the names of more than 6,000 casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom on Veterans Day.

Volunteers and students started reading the names at 6 a.m. outside of the Powell building at EKU. At BCTC, volunteers began reading the names at 8 a.m. All of the colleges that took part in the National Roll Call observed a moment of silence at 11 a.m.

"We did it last year and it was so meaningful. We wondered why aren't other campus doing this?", says Brett Morris. Morris is a veteran who works in EKU's Veterans Affairs office and spearheaded the movement to get more universities to take part.

Morris says it's important that those serving now know Americans remember the sacrifices of their fallen comrades and the sacrifices they continue to make.

By the end of the day, the names of those who have lost their lives will have been spoken aloud more than 1 million times.
