CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky mayor wants to resign and the city council wants to accept it. The only thing standing in the way is timing.
Catlettsburg Mayor Donald Wellman planned to resign on Thursday, but state law prevents that.
Under the law, there isn't a vacancy until Wellman fails to show up for a regular city council meeting - and the next one is January 15th.
Wellman officially took office in January 2007, although he started July 2006 to finish the term of Roger Hensley. Wellman stated by letter that his resignation would be effective on January Third, but the position can't be declared vacant until a regular council meeting.
