Vending Machine Thefts; Former State Employee Charged

Police say a former state employee stole keys to state vending machines during a burglary earlier this week.

Police say 32-year-old Shawn L. Long broke into the Frankfort Self Storage Center on Leestown Road in Frankfort and stole the keys.

Police arrested Long at his home in Frankfort. They say they found the keys and more than $500 in cash at his residence.

He's been charged with 3rd Degree Burglary and Theft By Unlawful Taking. He pleaded not guilty to those charges at an arraignment on Tuesday afternoon.

Judge not less thee be judged? Maybe there are extenuating circumstances. Maybe this young man has family that needs him. I'm not taking away from the despiration of the act, but that is what it was, desperate. Maybe this was a call for help. All is not lost for this young man. Pray for him.

It's a shame that a person resorts to robbery. If he worked for state government, then why didn't he stay and work? Or is he like so many young people that don't want to work, but feel society owns them a living! So many of the young state employee that I worked with (I'm now retired) would not show up for work on Mondays or Fridays, then get mad because they were written up. Something is wrong with us, we are not teaching work ethics to our young people. They are being given way too much as children and many grow up feeling that soceity owns them. I hope they throw the book at this young man. The best punishment would be make him work to pay back every dime plus pay for the damages that he caused. Putting him in jail will only serve to make him LAZIER than he already is. Making him work to repay will teach him that there is no free lunch for anyone! If he refuses to work to repay the money, then throw him in jail and throw away the key because he is useless to society.
