School Placed On Lockdown After Nearby Shooting

School officials put an elementary school in Lincoln County on lockdown on Thursday morning after a shooting near the building.

Students and staff at Highlands Elementary in Waynesburg were kept in classrooms and told to stay away from windows.

Police say 72-year-old Sharon Dale Greer shot Sandra Mullins about a quarter of a mile north of the school on U.S. 27 South.

Police say Mullins was conscious when they arrived on the scene. They wanted to airlift her from the scene, but the weather was too bad to bring in a helicopter. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Mullins is listed in serious but stable condition at the UK Medical Center.

Police brought in K-9 units and a helicopter to search for Greer. He was spotted at around 12:15, crossing a farm fence. About a half an hour later, several officers confronted Greer. Police say Greer then shot himself. He was taken to UK Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

At this time, no one is being allowed into or out of the school.

Charges against Greer are still pending.
