Cental Kentucky Water Supply Dispute On Hold

LEXINGTON, KY -- Next week's deadline for final arguments on Kentucky American Water's bid to build a new treatment plant have been put on hold, writes veteran reporter Andy Mead in the Saturday edition of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The delay is in place while the Public Service Commission considers Lexington's request for a 30-day delay Lawyers representing various parties in the case had been working toward a Wednesday deadline to file their final briefs in the case, which began last spring.

Instead, they're now facing a Tuesday deadline to let the PSC know where they stand on the extension request, reports the Herald-Leader.

Lexington's Urban County Council approved a resolution Thursday asking for the delay so it could hear from the Louisville Water Co. "and any other party offering a responsible solution" to water supply shortages.

Representatives of the Louisville company are scheduled to appear before the council at Tuesday's work session, reports the newspaper.

The company, which is owned by the city of Louisville, has proposed to bring treated Ohio River water through a pipeline that would run along Interstate 64.

Kentucky American's plan calls for building a new treatment plant on the Kentucky River north of Frankfort, also with a pipeline to bring the water to Lexington.

The PSC is considering the Kentucky American plan, but allowed Louisville to intervene in the case.

Kentucky American spokeswoman Susan Lancho said Friday that her company will oppose any extension, reports the Herald-Leader.
