KSP Trooper Critically Injured, Struck By Van

HENDERSON, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky State trooper is in intensive care after being struck while attempting to stop a van late Saturday night in western Kentucky.

Trooper Matt Wise and Trooper Jon Whittaker were standing in the median near the 70 mile-marker on Natcher Parkway in Daviess County trying to stop a van driven by Eric Johnson, 38, of Bowling Green.

The van veered off the road and tried to go between the two troopers. The van hit Whittaker's cruiser before striking Wise.

Wise was taken to Owensboro Medical Health System for surgery and was in the Intensive Care Unit late Sunday morning.

Johnson faces several charges, including first-degree assault, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.

2 cops hit in less than a week. Maybe they shoudl rethink procedure? When a cars runnin from your fellow cops at 90mph parking in the median isnt a good idea. Kinda like stoppin a train with your foot.

Why was the police officer trying to stop a speeding van by standing in the median? That sounds dangerous and not too smart. That is like taking a knife to a gun fight.

Where's the "attempted murder" charge?? I can not believe he's only charged with 1st degree assault. My thoughts and prayers are with Trooper Wise and his family.
