Police: Man Stole Car With Child Inside

Police made a quick arrest late Tuesday after they say a man took off with a car from a Danville gas station that had a five-year-old boy in the back seat.

Police say the suspect told them he was cold and looking for a warm place to stay at the Speedway downtown.

Police arrested Marvin Goodman, 43, not too far from the gas station.

Goodman faces theft and kidnapping charges.

Police say he waited until a woman went inside to pay for gas then got inside her car and took off.

Police say Goodman told them he didn't know the five year old was in the back seat.

He abandoned the car and child about one hundred yards from the gas station.

When police found the car, the child was safely inside it.

The child's mother is deaf and it took a few minutes for workers at Speedway to understand what was going on.

However, police say several witnesses saw the suspect and they quickly arrested Goodman.

The mother hasn't been charged since the child was left alone inside the unlocked car.

Lighten up people, the mother left her child inside the car because it was COLD OUTSIDE, and she didn't leave him for hours to go shopping, she ran inside the station to pay for gas. The true crime was the man stealing the car.

The mother should be punished for not caring enough about her child to ensure it's safety. The guy who stole the car should be charged with theft and kidnapping. It don't matter if she can't hear and apparently he couldn't see ....they are both at fault. Him more than her for being a low life thief. But either way they are both at fault.I don't care how deaf she was or how cold and homeless he was....there is no excuse for either crime here. Leave all the presidents alone they don't have a dog in this fight. We are homeless because we choose to be in one way or another. The government has too many hand outs available for anyone to live that way. If the guy chooses to live homeless, maybe he should move to a warmer climate. Or do like the one comment said and migrate!!!!! I never left my child alone in a car. I have seen too many cases of little kids being kidnapped and murdered because of scum.

I am sure thinking your child could be harmed, would be punishment enough.. she was scared to death.. What I think is ashame, is that Danville being where the deaf School is located, and so many deaf people living here, that no one could understand her. I think sign language should be taught in the school, especially in a deaf community

To everyone who is turning this into a debate on American society and policy, all I can say is keep spinning baby, keep spinning. I guess the police should have turned him loose, give him $100 for a nice warm motel room (which he'd quickly spend on crack) and pat him on the backside (for which he'd sue them) and send the poor fellow on his way. How dare that greedy deaf woman and her little brat keep all of that warm air for themselves! I'm outraged. I think social services should take the child from that greedy mother, better yet give the child to the car thief...er I mean underprivilaged citizen. It could be just like that movie with Will Smith. They could live in the bathroom at Crackway...er I mean Speedway and all hit it big someday. I'm tired of the MAN putting us down! If I want to steal a car, why should Ronald Reagan be able to stop me? (edited) Republicans, I bet the woman and her kid are Republicans too. After Al Gore's global warming kicks in, nobody will be cold!Go Al

As everyone, who has voiced an opinion before me I'll add some spice to the stew. As for the possible reasons this man was cold and needed a warm place, one could be he isn't able to hold down a job because of disabilities and is still waiting after 4 years for Social Security to not only hear his case but for him to turn 50 yrs old and then 6 months to get his back pay so he can afford a deposit on a place to live, or his wife threw him out without cash or credit cards and had the locks changed, and last but my favorite maybe he just likes the great outdoors but with Al Gore's Global warming he forgot to go south this year. Seriously about this subject, this man should be charged for stealing the lady's car even though it was so tempting already running and gased up it wasn't his for the taking. The kidnapping charge should be dropped, because believe me you couldn't give me a brand new Cadillac if it included a 5 year old kid. The mother has already suffered enough and learned better.

CM, the reason why the man is being charged is because he got into a car that didn't belong to him and stole it. Believe it or not, we still have laws in Kentucky against stealing a car.

The deaf have the ability to drive just as we do. The fact the mother is deaf is of no importance if this matter.

If the mother broke the law the mother should be charged, why is this even a question. I am a parent and in the days we are living now, I would never leave my children unattended for any amount of time for any reason. As far as hindsight goes, as a parent you have to be able to see what might happen if something like this happens, so that you don't make mistakes that put the lives of your children in danger after all you are the parent. As far as this station reporting the story right, I totally disagree this was a kidnapping, even if he didn't know the child was in the car. As far as the welfare system and why this man made the choices he made. In my opinion, the welfare system is not being used for in a way that FDR intended it to be used. It is being abused by people who don't want to work, because there are jobs out there, who have child after child so that they can collect more and more each month on their check. The systems needs fixing.

This should be a Visa ad- pay at the pump with your visa card or someone will steal your car and your kid!
