New Billboard Causing Controversy In Richmond

Is it good advertising, or a hazard for drivers?

That's what many in Richmond are asking, after a new electronic billboard was put up on East Main Street.

Richmond officials say they've received complaints about the billboard from people who say it's a distraction to drivers.

Richmond has a city ordinance governing signs and billboards, but it's 20 years old. Officials say they know signage has changed a great deal since then.

City leaders are thinking about drafting a new sign ordinance. But for now, the billboard is not the city's fight, it's the state's.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has given the billboard's owner 30 days to remove the sign, or change it to meet state codes.

The cabinet did not inform the sign's owner what penalty might be imposed if their deadline for changes isn't met.

ITS CALLED "RUBBER NECKING" TO ME THEY ARE A DISRACTION, WHERE I LIVE I PASS AT LEAST 6 OF THESE SIGNS ON MY WAY TO WORK, INCLUDING TO ONE HERE IN PAINTSVILLE. YOU CANT READ THESE SIGNS AND DRINE AT THE SAME TIME. TO ME THEY ARE A ROAD HAZZARD, BUT IT IS ALSO AN ADVERTISEMENT. DOES THAT MEAN ALL BILLBOARDS MUST COME DOWN? THAT IS WHERE THIS WILL LEAD. IF ONE BILLBOARD MUST COME DOWN THEN THEY ALL MUST COME DOWN.

"A distraction to drivers"? Maybe the billboard distracts them from other distractions, like lighting their cigerettes, tuning in the radio, dialing a cell phone number, or yelling at the kids.

Good for Richmond. Folks these signs are only a compliment to our metro area. Stop the complaining. If YOU are unable to drive from being distracted from a billboard then you should not be driving at all. It's a shame LEX lost their sign, it was beautiful and a compliment to our city. Unforunately, politics had it removed. Once again, if you are distracted from a billboard while driving, take your license to the DMV and give up. KY needs to grow with the times, just another sign were down on. Too bad for LEX, go RICH! :-)
