Council Debates Sewer Tax Increase

Outdated,inadequate, and a mess.
Those are just some of the words used to describe Lexington's sewer system. According to the Urban County Council, we've got to update our sewer systems.
The council is so serious about an upgrade that it wants to charge 48% more a year in sewer fees.
On Thursday, the public weighed in on the council's suggestion.
Many said that this decision is past due, claiming that over the years, overflowing sewers have polluted neighborhoods, farmland, and Lexington's watershed.
They said it would be irresponsible for the council not to raise taxes.
Others said just the opposite, citing that the tax hike would burden those in the lower and middle class.
The council will make a final decision on the matter the second week in February.
The Environmental Protection Agency has warned the city if it does not repair the sewer problems soon, the city will face federal fines.

So when is the right time to do it, wilhemakeit? When the EPA has fined Lexington $100 million for polluting the environment? When a community gets sick because of disease brought about by untreated sewer waste left in the open? How about when Lexington can hire illegal immigrants to do the labor for cheap and without safety equipment and regulations? :D

Meanwhile back at the boars nest Mayor Jimmie has the largest staff in history. I dont see him trimming any of his "fat" I agree this problem needs to be fixed but a giant TAX increase. What about builders that add extra sewege to the system. We bend over backwards for wet-back healthcare and ream the tax payers of Fayette Co. Rember Junior Blevins and this under-handed crew when they run for office the next time.

Whether Lexington residents like it or not, somebody has to pay for the mess, and in the end it will have to be the people who make the mess -- and that is everybody who is connected to the sewer system and uses it. It is the only fair way to start resolving it. Hopefully other cities will realize this and not let their sewer systems fall behind as their communities grow.

Again I say no to the sewer "TAX" increase. It is too much and at the wrong time. A "TAX" or a "FEE" can be dedicated to a special project or department. No sewer increase and NO CASINOS
