Bill Would Fund University Construction Projects

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky's public universities could more easily obtain financing for construction projects under a bill approved by the House.

The legislation would allow universities looking to building dormitories, libraries, laboratories or other campus facilities to issue their own revenue bonds. Under current law, universities must get legislative authorization and be included in the state budget.

Democratic State Rep. Bob Damron of Nicholasville says the measure essentially removes bureaucratic red tape that can delay construction of needed buildings.

The House approved the measure 91-0 on Friday. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
