Judge: Shane Ragland Liable In Football Player's Death

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Shane Ragland, who pleaded guilty to
manslaughter in the shooting death of University of Kentucky football player Trent DiGiuro, is legally liable in the death, a judge ruled Monday.
The ruling, issued in Fayette County Circuit Court, means DiGiuro's family is entitled to seek compensation from Ragland, who pleaded guilty in the football player's death.
The order did not say how much Ragland owes the DiGiuro family.
Lawyers for both sides said that figure would likely be determined by a jury.
Ragland was accused of targeting DiGiuro in revenge for keeping him out of a fraternity. He was convicted of murder in 2002 and sentenced to 30 years in prison, but he won a new trial after the state Supreme Court agreed that the prosecutor had made an inappropriate comment during trial and used inadmissible evidence concerning a bullet.
Ragland would have faced a retrial but pleaded guilty to manslaughter instead.
The case remained unsolved for six years, until police arrested Ragland, the son of a well-connected Frankfort businessman.
The DiGiuro family sued Ragland for wrongful death after his 2002 conviction. The family has acknowledged that the lawsuit is largely symbolic because Ragland has few assets to his name.

Would the Ragland family feel the same if the situation had been reversed?

Ragland should have spent the rest of his life in prison. He admitted to murder, what else does a jury need. What goes around comes around. Hats off to the Di Giuro family. My heart goes out to them.

I guess the city of Versailles will be helping the Raglands out by buying all of daddy's property here in Frankfort! I think the father should be stuck with his property and have no cash to give to his spoil little brat! I think every dime that Shane gets should go to the Digiuro family! Shane is a cold blooded killer and he will kill again because he knows that there is NO justice! Furthermore, I too wish the media would STOP giving him attention. He's a spoil little brat that deserves to die: an eye for an eye! Stop giving him the attention he craves!

I BELIEVE THAT THE DIGIYRO FAMILY WILL PREVAIL IN THIS MATTER.WHAT'S SO CLASSLESS IN THIS CASE IS THAT MR.RAGLAND(THE FATHER)WON'T STEP UP AND MAKE IT RIGHT WITH THIS FAMILY.THEIR SON IS GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN,THE RAGLANDS HAVE THEIR SON AND HE DIDN'T PAY THE PRICE.THE HONORABLE THING TO DO IS SETTLE THIS MATTER OUT OF COURT AND NOT SHUFFLE FINANCES.WHY NOT MR.RAGLAND MAN UP?I'M SURE YOU'RE SORRY THIS HAPPENED BUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME,I JUST CAN'T SEE YOU GUYS NOT STEPPING UP TOT THIS,YOU SON ADMITTED GUILT HERE.THE STATE SHOULD MOVE OUT OF ALL OF YOUR BUILDINGS IN FRANKFORT AND ANYONE ELSE WHO RENT FROM YOU.THIS IS CLEAR ARROGANCE ON YOUR PART.AT SOME POINT I BELIEVE THAT YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOW.THE MAN UP ABOVE WILL NOT LET THIS GO UNDONE.YOU GUYS RESOURCES,IT'S MY PRAYER THAT YOU GUYS SOFTEN YOUR HEART AND MAKE THIS RIGHT FOR THE DIGIUROS.SHOW SOME GOOD FAITH.STAY STRONG DIGIUROS,$$$$DON'T MAKE YOU.WE LOVE LOVE AND FEEL FOR YOUR LOST.GOD BLESS AND TAKE CARE OF YOU.

Why not make big bucks Daddy pay like he did to get Shane out of jail when he should have been sitting just rotting there. This is the saddest example of our justice system I have ever seen. I hope the Digiuro's never give up keeping Shane in the court system. He doesn't deserve to live with a moment's peace. Does anyone think the Digiuro family will ever have a day they don't have to think about Shane killing their son?

ENOUGH OF SHANE RAGLAND ALREADY!! the Digiuro family will probably never receive a cent which is so unfair but let's stop giving Ragland attention and publicity.

I will be glad when nothing else has to be sad about this case. This has went on forever and it is time to let it rest.

The family will never be able to get anything. It really doesnt matter how much money the father has, Shane has been in prison for years. I bet he has near nothing. Sadly the father will be smart enough not to leave his money to Shane in his will. Shane will live a pampered life and the other family will just live a life of grief missing their child.
