HONOLULU (AP) - A federal probe into how an air traffic control error put two jets in danger of colliding over Hawaii shows the worker didn't believe he was ready to direct aircraft from the radar station where he was assigned and had asked for more training.
The Federal Aviation Administration investigated the Jan. 14 incident involving Japan Airlines and United Parcel Service planes.
Documents obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request show the jets came within 300 feet vertically and under two miles horizontally before changing course to avoid collision.
The FAA says it took quick and decisive action in response to the incident. It says it pulled the controller off operational duties and gave him further training.
