High School Student Killed On His Way To School

Students at Madison Southern High School are mourning after a student died in a crash on Friday morning.

School officials say 16-year-old Dustin Scalf, who was a sophomore, was involved in an accident on US 25 in Berea just south of Herndon Lane, on his way to school.

Police say he lost control of his car, slid across the center line and into the path of another car who then hit him.

The mother of another MSHS student was in the other car involved in the crash. She was taken to Berea Hospital for treatment.

School officials say grief counselors will be called in to help students cope with the tragedy.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dustin Scalf," said Interim Superintendent Tommy Floyd. "It is always a tragedy to lose a young life. The district is part of a suffering community today. Madison County Schools is committed to doing everything possible to ease the pain and grief of Dustin's family, friends, classmates and teachers."

Dustin Scalf's funeral arrangements are not yet set, but the family tells us his services will be held at Lakes Funeral Home in Berea. They also say a fund is set up to help cover burial costs.

You can send donations to:

Dustin Scalf Memorial Fund.

The 16-year-old was a member of ROTC and was soon to be a volunteer firefighter.
He was a member of the Berea Voluntee Fire Departments "Explorer" group.
We're told, he one day hoped to go on and become a volunteer firefighter and was quickly becoming part of the family with the fire company.
To honor his life, and to help Scalf's family with funeral expenses, the department is raising money.

Donations can be accepted at any People's Bank in Madison County, or you can mail your donations directly to the Berea Volunteer Fire Department.
