Possible Panther Sighting In Southern Kentucky Save Email Print

A | A | A

A cat has some people in Whitley County taking a double take. It's not just any cat, however. Those who've spotted the feline describe it as "huge."

David Turner says a friend snapped a picture of the questionable cat with a cell phone camera. At first, he thought his friend had shown him a picture of a house cat as a joke, but then he realized he was he was looking at something much more ferocious.

"It's very evident if it's a picture of a house cat, this is a picture of something bigger," Turner says.

Turner said many people think the panther-like cat is a tall tale. But wildlife officials had said it's possible, although not likely, panthers could be seen in southern Kentucky.

"My primary concern is that people we know that there is something dangerous out there if they're walking," Turner tells us.

I believe there are panthers in KY. The reason this is disturbing to me is that panthers, cougars, and mountain lions are known to attack people if they think it's easy prey. I have two small children that could be an easy meal for a large cat. I know that they are here because me and my father seen one with our own eyes in our back yard. When it comes to animals I believe live and let live. However, I do not want my children or anyones' for that matter to become prey! I feel it's important to stay vigilant when it comes to strange animals being around. Knowing what's out there could save your life.

I also live in paducah and have seen one while walking on the flood wall around I-24 it was crossing the wall in a place where it divides a cow pasture and a pen where goats and chickens are kept. i knew it wasnt a house cat becuase the top of the earthen wall is just about as wide as a truck and it spand this entire length, it had a long tail, short snout and was jet black. we were probably 50 yards away from it, but once it noticed us it got real low and slunk away incredibly fast into some very dense brush. there was no doubt it was cat, dogs just dont move like that.

We live in West Paducah. (Western Kentucky) For at least 30 years we have heard panthers in this area. I have seen it twice and several neighbors have seen it also. Once you hear and see one you KNOW it is NOT a house cat. And for those of you who only have negative comments to add, who yanked your chain?? Not one comment has been made about "bothering" it or "getting all excited". It is just nice to know that someone else has seen one and would like to share their story because the majority of the people we tell don't believe us!!!

Anyone that has seen a cougar in ky please e-mail kypumasightings@yahoo.com

many and most of the wildlife says it is not likely to see panthers in kentucky, but i live in wallins kentucky, and there is an adult and a young baby panther roaming around and about our yard. we live closer to the mountains, and this panther comes out mostly during the day. we have seen them many times and we are quiet scare. we all have young children and fear for them.. i totally believe in them. to hear them scream and then to see one is really scary !

Posted by: Mellisa Location: Southern Kentucky on Apr 3, 2008 at 09:00 PM
I totally belive that there are panthers in southern kentucky. I have had many people who have seen them or what looks like to be panthers around where i live. And I'm not gonna say for sure that you have a picture of a real panther but it sure looks like one.

Posted by: David Location: KY on Feb 13, 2008 at 04:50 PM
Either there are at least 50 panthers in the state, or the same one is moving around quite a bit. Are you sure this isn't one of those house cats that escaped from a meth lab house?

Posted by: u r kiddin' Location: ky on Feb 13, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Why in the world is this story getting so many comments? Big deal! If it's a panther, it's a panther! Get over it and leave it alone! It obviously hasn't hurt anyone! There are a lot worse things out there that can and do hurt people, like other people! Let's shoot the drunk drivers, rapists, and baby killers and leave the cat alone!

Posted by: Dave on Feb 13, 2008 at 03:41 PM
Its not that far fetched. A while back there was a story of an african lion in eastern west virginia

Posted by: SR Location: Lexington on Feb 13, 2008 at 01:46 PM
I think this is exciting and hope that it is a panther ...

Posted by: SG Location: Foothills on Feb 13, 2008 at 01:31 PM
John from ashamed.. why don't you just go on somewhere and leave folks alone.. Hey I believe it.

Posted by: Paul Location: Lex on Feb 13, 2008 at 12:41 PM
The responses to this story remind me of criticisms people got when we started to see black bear return in greater numbers to eky. No one belived it till they saw one in there trash. I think its great, we need the predators. Our deer population is so vast now, and the elk herds are also growing faster than once imagined. side note, to John Ashamed, who cares how people express themselves as long as they express? Were you potty trained at gun point or are you just an intellectual snob?

i think there is panthers in ky.

Posted by: bob on Feb 12, 2008 at 05:19 PM
A mountain lion needs one deer a week to live the good life. So yes there is a food source for them. Eastern Ky is an ideal area for them to breed and live.

Anyone who hikes through Big South Fork or Bever Creek has seen the tracks. Dog Salughter Falls has tracks as well as Van Hook Falls and the Bald Rock narrows

I know some people say panthers don't exist here. I know better and so does most of the elders. There was one in the Dione community, Harlan Co., for years. We all saw it, knew where it was bedding at and told the wildlife dept about it. We even offered to take them to the old mine shaft it had been seen exiting and entering. We even recorded its "screams" for them to listen to. This was from 1977 up until 82. They told us to stay away from it and call again if any more of our pets went missing. Everyone just decided to not call anymore since there was nothing they could do anyway. It was scary though cause it seemed to always be out in the mornings when we had to catch the bus for school, especially in the winter. The screaming sound is gut wrenching. Hope I never hear it again. It was a pretty animal, fur so black it looked cobalt blue when the street lights shined on it. Tail as long as a broom handle and ran faster than any animal I've seen since.

As an avid outdoorsmen myself, and my friends as well. We don't really care that people think they know becasue of text book theory. We know what we have seen in the woods of eastern ky. And yes i know what a bobcat looks like and sounds like i have tagged 3 this year thank you, and the black me and my hunting partners have seen are in fact NOT bobcats. Mr. Turner i guarantee that was a black panther, I heard an old man telling me in davenports about seeing one about 2 years ago in the 3 point area.

Posted by: Bill on Feb 11, 2008 at 08:38 PM
I don't whats going on, but for the last few years we have started seeing deer, bear, elk, cougers, and coyotes, that were never here before. Now this strange large black cat?? All this has come about since the wild life people started turning elk out in our area.I don't think this change is by chance, because all of a sudden every time we go near the wild life areas. We are threatened with arrest. For no reason.{ we pay for it and they won't allow us to use it.}Then try to jail us for not understanding.=They start taking my live stock, and they will become exstict agian.

BLACK PANTHER.....HUM...KINDA LIKE BIG FOOT!!! SO MANY PEOPLE SEE IT, TAKE PICTURES OF IT, AND THEY HERE THEM, BUT NEVER NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF ONE. BOB CATS CAN REACH AS HIGH AS 3 FEET FROM GROUND TO TOP OF HEAD. THEY CAN ALSO BECOME BLACK IN COLOR. AS FAR AS ALL THE SCREAMS YOU PEOPLE ARE HEARING....HAVE YOU EVER HEARD A BOBCAT???? SOUNDS JUST LIKE A BABY YELLING OR WOMAN SCREAMING. THERE ARE BOBCATS IN THE AREA AND LOTS OF THEM, BUT TO THIS DATE THERE HAVE NEVER BEEN ANY PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF COUGARS OR BLACK PANTHERS IN THIS AREA. THEY ARE NOT EVEN NATIVE TO THIS AREA. KEEP UP THE PHOTS THOUGH.....MAYBE WE CAN GET ONE OF NESSIE IN LAUREL LAKE!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Corbin on Feb 11, 2008 at 09:27 AM
Ask a game warden, I have told them about seeing them several times. They will tell you they are supposed to tell us large cats don't exist in KY. But they stress the supposed to.... and smile

Posted by: Seen one myself Location: Casey County on Feb 11, 2008 at 08:57 AM
I saw one way back around 1970, There have been several sightings since then. Also we do have bears.

Posted by: Paul Location: Lex on Feb 11, 2008 at 08:33 AM
A neighbor of mine in Morehead claimed to have seen several large cats like this near the Licking River. What he described to me, wasn't black though.. it was gray. The western cougars (mountain lions), are tawny in color, the eastern cougars were gray. Large black cats are jaguars..Several have been spotted in North eastern Ky, old hill folks call them catamount.

Posted by: Geanner Location: South McCreary Co.Ky on Feb 11, 2008 at 08:33 AM
Well, I'm not sure about this particular picture, but these cats, cougars/mountain lions or black panthers as they are called DO EXIST here. We have seen them numerous times, heard them quite a bit also. A cousin of mine that lives in Scott Co. Tn. lost a foal to one a few years ago and the game warden there absolutely denies they still exist. But there lay the proof, neck line bitten, long, deep claw like wounds on the shoulders and sides. Last time I checked my "coon dogs", their toe-nails were too blunt to cause this kind of damage. The last siting here was in the south Strunk area, west of hwy 27 this year!

Posted by: c Location: fkt on Feb 11, 2008 at 07:22 AM
I believe there are panthers here. My mother & brother have both seen them in Owen Co. I've heard them up there all my life! So the wildlife people don't everything about KY! Because panthers do live here!

I have seen a black cat about 7 feet long. Its tail is close to 3to 4 feet.I have seen these cats 3 times this summer and then agian this fall. This is no Bob Cat,in fact we see Bob Cats and Coyotes all the time.I have allso seen two cougers this year, but this cat is much bigger. Each time I have seen this animal, its been in day light. While traveling thur the mtn.s to feed my live stock.

Posted by: Smokie Location: The Hills on Feb 10, 2008 at 08:28 PM
Here kitty, kitty, kitty. Seriously folks, if its a panther, leave it alone. Why can't we appreciate nature in its beauty. We do not need to kill everything that is a bit different.

Posted by: Cool J Location: Whitley on Feb 10, 2008 at 08:19 PM
I live right next to where the panther was sited. It was actually sited on HWY 204 E. Several years ago four friends and I saw one run out in front of my car. We thought it was a black dog until it turned and ran up into a field. Then we noticed its long tail and cat-like run. We stopped and watched it for a moment, and then it ran up into the woods. There was no doubt it was a very large cat.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 10, 2008 at 08:06 PM
I've seen one in Harlan county many times. what's the big deal

Posted by: Bob Location: Wayne CO. on Feb 10, 2008 at 08:03 PM
We have seen these big cats in Wayne Co. also, my son was driving home late one night on a rural road and two of them ran out in front of him, one chasing the other and he accidentally hit one with his truck but did not kill it, he said he thought it was dogs at first but it looked at him as it limped off into the woods and he could then tell it was a cat like a cougar. Fish and Wildlife came out and my son showed them the location where the incident happened and they searched but could not find it, from the imprint left on his bumper it was one BIG cat.

Posted by: Rob Location: London on Feb 10, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Mr.Turner, there are a lot of ferocious and sangerous things out there walking...But wildlife is not one of them.Your meth-head neighbors, yeah, but evidently this cat isn't too dangerous....I haven't heard of anyone dieing from it....think people...we live in the country. If you don't like the cat,MOVE!!!!

Posted by: club member on Feb 10, 2008 at 06:32 PM
As a member of several wildlife groups, unless I am totally off base here-- Aren't bobcats smaller, and have shorter tails? Panthers do exist in KY. I have seen bobcats, several others have seen panthers. Panthers follow their food source.

Posted by: Gail Location: Lawrenceburg on Feb 10, 2008 at 04:30 PM
This is a beautiful animal who should be left alone to live its life in peace. Just remember the rules when in nature and we can coexist together.

I worked on a strip job we would feed 2 kittins and the mommy cat there here

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Corbin on Feb 10, 2008 at 03:32 PM
I am glad this came up, I have seen on numerous occasions what I and others believe to be a black panther, in the devils creek area, peters mountain area (not too far from rock creek) Wolfe Creek, and in the cold hill area of laurel co. Though no one but the people who were on the hunting trips with me believe it, they are in KY. Officials will tell you that they are supposed to tell us that KY does not in habit large cats, they will tell you that with a smile they know. So do the people who have witnessed them.

Posted by: Wow Location: RIchmond on Feb 10, 2008 at 03:27 PM
I bet none of you nuts that see black cats at night even know what a panther really is. You probally saw a bobcat that took the genetic turn of solid black fur. Most true panthers are just cougars that still have spots and arent really solid black they just appear it. Btw if you live up in the mountains you should expect to see a few predators that arent in the city. Remember your the invasive species not the rattle snake or scorpion. You chose to buy a house in the middle of no where and thats where the animals that dont like people live.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 10, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Oh Yes I know it could be a Panther I have seen one not to long ago! Onl not in Whitley County but in Harlan County

Posted by: Bill Scott Location: Somerset on Feb 10, 2008 at 09:00 AM
Just saw the panther story. Let me tell you it's real Almost 13 years ago I was camping on the Rock creek area in McCreary and as night fall was starting we had packed up to leave and as I pull up to the edge of the gravel road I flipped my lights and there set a black panther looking cat the size of a hound dog. It just got up and slowly walked away. I know it was because I was less than 10 feet from it and headlights on it. So don't fool yourself they are out there.

Posted by: Gail Location: Harlan County, Ky. on Feb 10, 2008 at 08:45 AM
I believe it was a black panther, because i saw one about 2 years ago in the Bledsoe area crossing the road on 221 out from the Pine Mountain Settlement School. It ran in front of my car I thought I was going to hit it.

Dang!!! I wondered where my cat went to when he ran away. Looks like he got into a nuclear power plant and has grown a little since I last saw him 6 weeks ago. Please don't hurt him, he's such a teddy bear. But seriously, can't tell relative size from the picture, but if it's as big as it looks, it can't be a house cat.

Black labrador??

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Southern KY, on Feb 9, 2008 at 05:14 PM
Look up images on a black panther and look at tail. A regular housecats tail does not drag the ground like that. The ground should be wet enough for it to have left paws prints.

Posted by: watchful on Feb 9, 2008 at 11:32 AM
There are many unseen animals out there. I am ever so watchful while out walking. Family members have seen them in our area. These animals are out there, keep an ear and eye open at all times. You will be amazed at what is actually roaming our state.

I lived in Charlotte NC for a number of years and a "panther" or "jaguar" was sighted there several times. Turns out it was just a big Black feral cat. At least they did not kill it like Mr Turner wants to do.

I have many relatives in Southern Ky and when I was younger I remember all the older ones telling us not to be out very far away from them. I would spend the weekend at an aunt's home and you could hear something like a woman screaming at night. I asked her what it was and she told me it was a panther. She is about 85 years old now and still lives at the same place.I believe the picture is a panther.Beautiful HUH?

Posted by: Ky gal Location: KY on Feb 9, 2008 at 08:08 AM
I do believe this!! My mother heard one in the hills near the house back in the late 60's. She heard the wails like a woman screeching screams and at times like a whimpering child. Recently a neighbor seen a black panther, in broad daylight, cross the road here in southeastern Ky.

Another thing we remembered concerning the sighting. No one ever saw the cat until early evening or night and during the night that awlful sound we had never heard before and have not since. The sound was like a woman screaming for her life, it was awlful. If you hear it, you will never forget the sound. Even neighbors who did not see the cat heard the screams at night while sleeping.

Believe it if you wish but I have seen one myself on 1955 in the area of the Red Hill Community.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: Frankfort on Feb 8, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Addional information on previous comment. Wildlife persons from Frankfort told us all thay found were bobcat footprints around our pond, but what I saw was NO bobcat. When it ran in front of my car, my headlights made it possible for me to get a VERY good look at what I was seeing and it was NO bobcat! It was big, black, very long tail and the cat ran like nothing I have ever seen before. People should be cautious in the area where the cat has been spotted. Also, our pets at the time were acting very funny. Our dog at the time would not go outside at night to potty. And we had several outside cats to disappear. Wildlife never confirmed the cat but we all know in our area that it was there for a couple of weeks and we never saw it again after that. I wish I could remember the exact year but I can not.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: FRANKFORT on Feb 8, 2008 at 11:01 PM
People should not take this likely. Years ago (about 14 I think) I saw what appeared to be black panther. One night, something ran in front of my car and I felt like I was seeing things, cause it sure looked like a blck panther to me, ran like one. I told my husband and he laughed at me. Within a week, the sightings in our area were getting attention from the Game Farm. Then my husband saw it along with a elderly neighbor one night. Others in the area confirmed seeing the large cat also. The people from the game farm camped on our property (we have a small pond and we believe the cat was coming there at night for water) and and neighbors property for a couple of nights and after that NO ONE in our area ever saw this black panther again that Wardons say they never saw. We are all normal average people and the ones of us who saw this cat know what we saw and will never be convinced otherwise.

i beleive the pic of the cat could very well be a panther they,ve been seen on hwy 204 which is just a little ways from that location i,ve heard something years ago that my dad said was a panther
