Family Torn Over Cemetery Vandalism

Several grave stones at a cemetery in the Roark Community in Leslie County were damaged. Now the family is demanding answers!

Those who have loved ones buried at the cemetery say it's obvious the vandals made it up to the tombstones by four wheeler; then caused thousands of dollars in damage for reasons no one can explain.

The cemetery is a place of solace for the Collett family, a small cemetery in the Roark Community where generations of those they love are buried.

Family members say it came as quite a shock to find a place where they come to remember, is now a crime scene.

"I don't know why people want to do it for. I think it's crazy," Andrew Collett said.

Collett just stopped by to visit his mother's grave on Monday. But it was sometime in the night when vandals struck damaging tombstones, knocking down flower arrangements and destroying a place of comfort for the Colletts.

"I hope they catch'em who ever it is. I can't understand anything about it but this. There was no reason for that. It's bad," Collett said.

The Collett family is offering a reward of $500 for information leading to an arrest in the case police are investigating.

Several of the tombstones cost the family about $7,000 dollars a piece.

Bart, you are exactly right. If it is in fact minors then they will walk away without being punished. No one expects law enforcement to sit guarding cemetaries. Keep your kids at home or at least know where they are and what they are doing and crimes such as this will be cut in half. It takes a low person to vandalize a grave. I hope they are caught and prosecuted.

My heart goes out to the Collett family. This shows the lack of respect abounding in this country. Respect is no longer taught in the home, at school, and sadly not even at church! Parents have become afraid of their own children. They refuse to discipline them because they have been sucker into thinking that it is abuse. If you love a child, you will teach them and DISCIPLINE them. Spanking may not work, but sending a child to his room full of electronics is no punishment either! I hope these individuals are forced to pay for the damages they have done. That would be a better punishment. Make them start paying for damages they cause at any age! Children have far too much just given to them these days. Make them start earning some of those things they want or you will have a bunch like this bunch that destroyed property because they didn't have anything better to do. I wish they would bring back the draft, that would help get some of these punks off the streets & a little discipline.

Looks like the four-wheelin' backer'-chewin' misbehavin' red-necks are at it again. Mark my words, this will come home to them a hundred fold. It will be hard to feel sorry for them then.

i think one of the reasons people do things like this is because no one is afraid of consequences anymore..when i was growing up, i was not only afraid of the law but my parents..parents now adays think their kids do no wrong and kids have control over them.. these people, whether they are minors or not, need to be punished so that the next time they think of destroying someone else property, they will think..."maybe we shouldnt do this because if we get caught the punishment will be way worse then the thrill of the crime.

Bart, I think you're our oppressor. The cops do what the law says, the law is made by the lawmakers (duh) and you elect the lawmakers. See how it's all your fault Burt.
