UK Coach Answers Lincoln County Woman's "Call" For Help

The “General Store” has been somewhat of a legendary call in radio shows for years in the Lincoln County area.

People call in with almost anything you can think of to buy or sell. But one recent call was quite different.

“Someone even made the comment; you could hear the despair in her voice,” said Morning Show Announcer Jayme Phillips of the caller.

A woman said she needed to sell her car to pay for a trip to Cleveland to attend her father's funeral.

“She wasn't asking for help. That's what makes this so unique. She wasn't on there begging for help,” said Phillips.

Later, the host took another call in response.

“She answered the phone. The guy said, ‘Renee, my name is Billy and I would like to help this lady out’.”

That “Billy” turned out to be none other than Billy Gillispie and sure enough, after the call for help turned to be legit, a check arrived from the UK coach himself.

Announcers say why Billy Gillispie was listening to a "buy-sale-trade" call in show an hour’s drive from Lexington isn't important.

“He just heard a need, and like Renee said, it really didn't matter who he was. He was just a man with a kind heart and he just did the right thing.”

This reply is to Jessie and anyone who thinks that I didnot respect coach G. first off we turned down wlex 18 on the story, 2nd we turned down the danville newspaper. But then Larry Vaught called someone in Lexington and got the story from them and ran it on Valentine Day paper. Then Wkyt's Phil Pendleton ask for the story I said no he would have to ask the station owner and he said if it was ok with coach. Wkyt manager called and ask him and he said he did not do it for attention but since it was out that it would be okay then and only then did I do the story I think it was awesome what he did I would never want to take anything away from that.I never realized this message board was here or I would have said this sooner, So again thanks to Billy G, for listening to WPBKFM if I'm aloud to spread a little more butter Thanks alot Jayme Phillips

Hey coach, I need 500 million dollars just in case this casino thing doesn't get passed. Can you spare a brother a dime?

I'm just glad the woman got to attend her father's funeral. I'm also glad the news was passed along to the public. The media is so quick to print anything bad a head coach, teacher, politician, etc, does. God Bless the Coach and as another person has already stated, his reward will come. Let the critics have their say. How sad to look at the negative side.

What an AWESOME act of kindness by Coach Gillespie! He didn't have to help the lady he heard on the radio, but his heart went out to her, and I'm sure if others out there could have afforded to help her they would have. Thanks, Coach Gillespie for showing that there are people out there willing to help others. Its nice to see in this day and age when all you see is the bad stuff!

With all the rumors going around about how poor Billy G's character is its good to hear about him doing something like this. I wish all the rumor starters would stop and read what he DID do instead of making stuff up. I know this isn't the forum to talk about rumors against the Coach but at least we here have evidence of something he did do. I commend him on his helping this lady out during her hardship and I pray for comfort and peace to her during her time of grief.

Way to go Billy G, but is so sad that you tried to help someone and keep it private, and the radio station could not grant you that one once of respect. Jayme had to get on their and spill the beans like he was someone special. Kudos to you coach, Shame on you Jayme Phillips. Not all news needs to be spread like butter.
