Committee Votes No On Casinos

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A proposal to legalize casinos in Kentucky
has been voted down by a sharply divided House committee.

Two separate proposals were up for consideration on Tuesday, but
the Committee on Elections, Constitutional Amendments and
Intergovernmental Affairs couldn't agree on either.

Gov. Steve Beshear met with House Speaker Jody Richards and
other Democratic leaders in his office Monday night in an effort to
nudge his gambling proposal along.

Beshear wants Kentucky lawmakers to approve a constitutional
amendment that would allow casino gambling in the state.

It might be a good investment if the electecd official don't give themselves a raise first. I think they should cut thier pay by 8%, that should give a good jump start to raising money for our very poor state. Go to the budget on the government web site to see that we are broke I did and this is a joke they just need to cut some of thier special projects that don't mean a hill of beans to the working people of this state. And if they want special session this year they can do it free of charge. Teachers are paid a salary and have it attend meetings, set thier classrooms each yearwithout extra pay. Most salary people have to go beyond a 40 hour week so can they!!!!

I would love to see casinos in Ky. I would much rather spend my money in my own state rather than IN. people opposed the lottery when it was 1st mentioned it seems to be doing great. It would mean more jobs for us which we are in need of. People need to open there eyes we are not living in the past we need to look forward to the future. Manchester surely needs to grow and bring new bussiness to the county so maybe our children would not have to leave to work and make a living

A big thank you to the ones that voted against expanded gambling. Now if we can get Gov. Beshear to focus on getting legitimate jobs in the state instead of worrying about the interest of people that padded his campaign we will be doing good.

I for one am fed up with government in Frankfort! All ready they are hinting at a special session. Everyone knows how expensive that is and we don't have any money. If our legislators cannot get their job done in the time alloted, they should come back at their own expense. It seems like ever since they started meeting every year, less and less gets done. If they can't do their job, they should resign and let someone who can serve. Also, I feel that the whole lottery business is a joke. The big issue is to let the people vote on it. The people cannot amend the constitution. That can only be done by the legislators and even though the people might vote approval, that's no sign the legislators will abide by it and vice versa. The lottery was supposed to solve all our financial problems and it didn't. Why should we think the casinos will? Looks like to me, there are too many chiefs and not enough indians.

If Fletcher hadn't been such a dissapointment, many Kentuckians would not have been duped into electing Beshear..I mean from promoting gambling to messing with the states retirement system..what's his next move?....seems he's biting the hands that feed him and he'll go out of office as a bigger joke than Fletcher.
