Storm Spotter Classes Open To The Public

Trained storm spotters, coupled with advanced radar systems, have helped pinpoint severe storms over the years. Lexington Division of Fire officials are helping to increase the number of weather spotters by offering a training class to the public this March.

While radars can accurately depict storm location, spotters out in the field have the ability to visualize a storm. They can recognize heavy lightning, large hail, and the basic formations of a tornado. They then will relay all information to the local National Weather Service office.

Dion Lemieux, Fire Emergency Services, says, "The whole class is to help people and to be a part of the community and to let us know what's going on."

The next class will be held on March 20th at 7 p.m. at the Fire Training Center on Old Frankfort Pike in Lexington. If you plan to attend, please call ahead to register:

People of all ages are encouraged to attend.

I've been spotting storms ever since I was tall enough to look out the windows of our house. What's so hard about that to where you need a class?

What an interesting and educational class. I would love to see something like this come to my area as well. Classes like this could prove very productive as well as spark a flame in young people to persue further education in this field. Kudos to whoever came up with this idea.
