Beshear, Democrats Meet Over Cigarette Tax Proposal

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - House Democrats have met in private with
Gov. Steve Beshear about his plan to increase state revenue by
boosting the state's cigarette tax to a dollar a pack.

Beshear announced his plan to raise the cigarette tax following
a meeting with Democrats on Thursday night. The two sides have
different ideas on how to close an estimated $900 million state
revenue shortfall.

Beshear left the meeting Friday morning as Democrats continued
to meet. As he left the meeting, Beshear said Democrats need to
work together and not stay at odds over the state's fiscal crisis.

Beshear has previously opposed raising taxes and has pushed for
state lawmakers to advance a proposal that would legalize casino
gambling.

Now, Beshear says the fate of his gambling proposal is uncertain
this session. Instead, he wants to use money from the cigarette tax
increase to finance bonds and bring in $800 million for the state
to use over the next two years.

WHY IS IT THAT THE CIGARETTE TAX IS ALWAYS THE WAY OUT? WHY ISN'T ALCOHOL TAX EVER INCREASED? THE GOVERMENT IS ALWAYS PICKING ON THE SMOKER WHEN ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION CAUSES MANY MORE PROBLEMS, BUT MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE ALOT OF GOVERMENT OFFICIALS ARE SOCIAL DRINKERS, AND NOT SMOKERS! WHY DON'T WE START BEING FAIR AND STOP DISCRIMINATING AGAINST SMOKERS?!!!

Evelyn in Morehead. Most people that smoke respect the ones that do not. So why are you sticking your nose in our business? I would say that every one that don't smoke has at least one bad habit that could be deemed as unhealthy.Do you overeat? Are you sexually active with more than one person in your past? Right, that is none of my business.....the same as me smoking is NONE of your business. All you non-smokers out there need taxes raised on your fast food, name brand clothes, you get the idea. There are not enough smokers left to raise taxes on tobacco and make a difference. Beshear is just having a temper tantrum because everyone is against his casinos. I bet the non-smokers would die if there was a tax like this put on entry fees to the casinos. Lay off us smokers. Most of you trying to force us to quit have had some kind of luxury in life from all the past years of tobacco being Ky cash crop. How soon you forget! As I said in earlier comment As*h***S!!!!! Bless you Joyce!

Tax on cigarettes this is crazy don't just look at one bad habit go ahead and tax as many bad habits as you can! Some people say yes tax cigarettes that way young people will not start smoking and other people that are smoking will quit. Why not tax alcohol or both. The Govenor should tax alcohol! Put it to the voters what do you think should be taxed? Gambling - such as the lottery, bingo, horse racing, or alcohol sales 10 cents per drink including each can of beer, why not make all of the commonwealth pay taxes and include several different items to raise taxes on! We are taxed too much now - leave the smokers alone!
