Police Shoot, Kill Suspected Bank Robber

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - One man was shot and killed by police after a midday bank robbery and chase ended in a residential neighborhood, Louisville police said.
A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy was investigating a report of a suspicious man behind a Stock Yards Bank in Louisville when a report of a bank robbery was called in just before noon EDT Monday, Louisville police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said. The man got in a car and fled about a half-block from the bank, where he was shot.
Smiley said the man had a gun.
"He also displayed his weapon at one point," Smiley said.
The identities of the dead man and the nine officers who fired the fatal shots and the number of shots fired were not immediately available. Six police officers and three sheriff's deputies, none of whom was injured, were placed on paid administrative leave, Smiley said.
Officers found an undisclosed amount of cash and a gun in the man's car, Smiley said.
Two people who live in the neighborhood where the shooting took
place said they heard what sounded like multiple gunshots after hearing police shout for someone to put down a weapon.
"It was wild. I've never heard nothing like it before. They told him to put his gun down. I guess he shot first and they opened fire," Kenny Hite, who was visiting a friend in the area, told The Courier-Journal.
Carl Hamm said he saw police with handguns and rifles hiding behind their cars and firing.
"It was unbelievable really," Hamm told the paper.
No one inside the bank or in the neighborhood was hurt, Smiley said. The incident remained under investigation Monday afternoon.
An FBI spokesman, David Beyer, said that agency is also investigating the bank robbery but he would not comment further.
