Judge Overturns Former Officer's Misconduct Conviction

BEREA, Ky. (AP) - A judge has overturned a former police officer's conviction on an official misconduct charge.

Senior Judge Michael Harrod ruled to acquit former Berea Police Lt. Billy Beavers after finding that the trial court "erred by overruling defendant's motions for directed verdict."

Beavers was convicted of the misdemeanor charge after a Madison County jury found that he broke rules by not filing a use-of-force report following the arrest of a suspect last July. The jury fined him $1.

Prosecutors had argued that Beavers intentionally opted not to fill out the report after assisting in the arrest of a suspect during a vehicle pursuit. The jury ruled Beavers did not intentionally forget to put the report together.
