Basketball Cats' Dad Charged With Scamming Family

GEORGETOWN, KY -- The state trooper who investigated the father of a University of Kentucky basketball player said the father scammed a Paris couple with the promise of $4,800 worth of season tickets, and then sent them a Christmas card apologizing for the tickets he did not own, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader in its Sunday edition.

Jeff Carter, 62, of Georgetown, father of junior center Jared Carter, 21, has been indicted on a charge of theft. The indictment said that between July 18 and 21, Carter "unlawfully obtained $4,800 from Paul and Anne King for specified property and instead converted the money to his own use, never delivering said property."

Trooper Dennis Mabry of the Dry Ridge state police post said Carter promised the couple UK season tickets for the tenth row at center court, reports the Herald-Leader.

But Carter never had the tickets to sell, and he sent the couple an apology through a Christmas card, Mabry said. The couple have not received their money back, Mabry said.

The indictment, which also charged Carter as a persistent felony offender, was returned Feb. 12. Carter was arraigned March 11, and his next hearing is scheduled for April 8, the newspaper reports.

Carter could not be reached Saturday night. Mabry started investigating the complaint in November. Mabry said the couple met Carter at a Lexington store where he struck up a conversation, and then became friends with them. The couple took money out of their retirement to buy tickets for their son as a present, Mabry tol.d the Herald-Leader.

But the couple became suspicious after they asked for exhibition tickets during the preseason, but Carter said the tickets were not part of the sale. The couple's daughter contacted the UK Athletics Department and learned that Carter did not have tickets to sell. Mabry said he has not spoken to Carter.

Mabry said people can call UK Athletics to verify who has initially purchased season tickets, the Herald-Leader reports.

"UK can tell them if it is a scam or not," Mabry said. "If it sounds like it is too good of a deal, it probably is."

We have him on the team because Tubby recruited him. Leave the kid alone, it is not his fault. Hold your head up Jared, most people know you had nothing to do with it. As for playing time for Jared Carter, I am sure that Coach G. gives him what he earns in practice just like the others. Prosecute the Dad to the fullest but please don't take it out on the kid as I am certain he has enough on his plate right now. Go Cats! Have a great life all!

The young man's reported laziness looks like a direct lineage from papa. I have had conversation with papa and he was constantly berating Billy G. because his poor little (lazy) boy wasn't getting playing time. Go Billy G., you are doing just fine.

Why blame the kid? He's not responsible for his father's sins! Sure he's going through a lot of embarrassment right now and I feel sorry for him.

Don't blame the kid for his dad's mistakes! He obviously DESERVES to be on the team or else he wouldn't be. I'd like to see him play MORE!
