Senate Calls For Smaller Raises For Teachers

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Teachers would receive smaller pay raises
under a budget proposal being considered by Senate lawmakers.

The Senate Appropriations and Revenue Committee was preparing
for a vote on the two-year spending plan on Monday morning. The
measure was expected to get to the Senate floor for a vote Monday
afternoon.

The proposal calls for 1 percent wage increases in each of the
next two fiscal years for public school teachers. A proposal
approved by House lawmakers earlier this month would provide raises
of 1 percent in the first year of the budget and 3 percent in the
second.

First of all before you start downing teachers research what you are saying ... Teachers can only teach what the state gives them. The state wants "HIGH" test scores so the teachers are forced to teach the test basically, if the test is going to be over Math, the teachers are required to teach 2 Math classes and forget about Science. As far as the students not being taught things such as "what to do with their own waste" that is very hard when teachers try to punish students and they are sent back to the classroom and told to apologize and that is the end of it. You tell me how a teacher is suppose to handle all of these situations on his/her own with no support from the administration! They deserve much higher pay than state employees, they deal with alot more than most. Teachers have to deal with problems in school and problems kids bring to school with them, teachers are who the outbursts happen on in most cases. Our hardest working men and women are our teachers and coal miners

The truth is that they are teachers out there that do not have an interest in teaching the children, just drawing a pay check. Some of these people don't even like children, they just became one because it is one of the better paying jobs in Kentucky.Only people with the true desire should teach children, and some schools reqire just that.I see teachers daily that can't even control a classroom much less teach the children. And I do agree some children can't be taught because of no displine at home.

Lazy overpaid teachers are a weight around the necks of the state and our Pop.Our childern are not being taught as should be,and sports programs have become more important then the 3 R's.most kids don't know what to do with thier own waste, or who the present president of the country is.Our rd sides, and river banks are covered with trash because the kids are not taught better.=they don't need more money they need thier pay cut.

I think it's time we impeach everyone in frankfort and start over. When it comes election time is when we can get even.Let us think back who educated you folks in frankfort? Who educated the Doctors and Attorneys? If not for school personal we would be a third world country.School presonal are one of the lowest payed smartest people in this state.I think we as school employees need to protest what Frankfort is about to vote.Gov.it's time to stand up for the people that elected you,and Daniel. If you can't help us then don't ask for our vote in four years!!!!!!

What the devil?!?! the Teachers deserve a LOT more than what they are getting now and the Senate wants to cut them? It's stupid. They do not get enough for the work they do. Especially with how the cost of living is increasing right now, 1% is very very low. But I do disagree with the comment let the best teachers get the raises, even the best teachers can get some kids that they can not teach well because the kids do not want to learn and their parents will not make them learn. why punish the teachers for the child's problems? That is cutting off your nose to spite your face, it's stupid.

I AM NOT A TEACHER BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THEY HAVE THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB,OTHER THAN PARENTING IT IS NOT AN EASY JOB. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR 20-30 KIDS AT A TIME HAVING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SCHOOL TEST NUMBERS ARE JUST SO.. THEY STAY LATE BRING WORK HOME WITH THEM AND YOU WANT SMALLER INCREASES IN PAY FOR THEM? IF WE COULD CUT SOME OF THE OTHER JOBS THAT ARE NOT NEEDED AND ASK THE GOVERNOR TO TAKE A PAY CUT ALONG WITH SENTORS AND SUCH. THEY COULD PAY TEACHERS AND THEN THE TEACHERS MAY TAKE MORE PRIDE IN WHAT THEY DO. THERE WILL SOON BE NO JOBS OUR ECONOMY IS HORRIBLE AND WHO WANTS GO TO SCHOOL FOR YEARS TO BECOME A TEACHER REMEMBER YOU TELL US "KY EDUCATION PAYS DOES IT." OR DOES IT??????????????????

School employees should get the raises they deserve. They work with children daily.Good teachers do not just go to college get a degree and thats the end,1st they have to have an desire to be with these students, and contenue thier education thier whole career. After the bachorler degree they pay for it themselves.Let the test scores decide who gets the raises, your best teachers will have the higher scores because they reach the children they teach. This would also weed out the rest or make them have the desire to do the job.

It is apparent and very clear that EDUCATION PAYS is not a very well understood or apprecaited concept in the General Assembly; it has become a slogan with no marketing value. People should demand high quality teachers in the classroom with accountablity and that professional educators with proven success in the classroom be rewarded! jus my 2 sense 4 wat is wurth

Let's call it like it supposed to be called, the puny raise is just another way the Gov. is trying to push his casinos.
