Gas Drive-Off Bill Advances In House

The argument is that stations are losing a lot of money because of drive offs and police say they don't have the time or the manpower to go after every gas thief.

But if a station has a camera to capture the license plate of the thief, a proposed law would allow the retailer to seek civil action against the thief.

"The person is required to pay the cost of the gas plus pay a 30 dollar penalty," says Rep. Rob Wilkey, D-Scottsville.

The alleged thief has 30 days to pay up...or appeal their case through the legal system.

"I just don't think it's a good piece of legislation," says Rep. Jim Wayne, D-Louisville.

Wayne says the bill makes it too tough for innocent victims to argue their case.

"An ordinary citizen can be falsely accused, because of faulty or mis-information," said Wayne during a House floor debate on Friday.

There is one simple solution to solve the problem of gas drive-offs. Pre-pay. No money, no gas. Problem solved. This is a very preventable crime.

All this will do is tie up the court system more than it's already is & cost taxpayer money we don't have. Moreover, innocent citizens can be harassed by some misinformation on the part of a station. I don't think this bill should become law! It's a bad bill! What oil company is paying to have it pushed through the General Assembly? Or better yet, what lawmaker owns a gas station? They cannot pass an illegal immigration bill, but they can waste time with this one? Has to be that someone in the GA will benefit from it's passage! Money talks! I say kill this bill! It would cost taxpayers more to find these thieves than it's worth & only benefit the stations! Courts cannot handle anymore nonsense on a tight budget! Pass a more worthy while bill like the immigration bill that was killed in committee by Kathy Stein! That bill would have benefited more people than this would will do! Stop wasting time on nonsense such as this bill!

Why not simply replace all gas pumps with the pumps that only accept credit/debit cards-- or set up a system that you have to give the station cash before pumping up, and then when you're done, they will give you the change back. SIMPLE! Geez, it doesn't have to be VERY COMPLICATED.

First of all, if gas companies were not gas gauging they would not have this problem. Second of all, I don't care if it was a 5 cent piece of gum, stealing is stealing and people should pay for their crimes. I have to agree I don't think this is a good bill, I know the gas companies use their cameras to catch people in the act but what happens if they mistakenly accuse someone and that person really has no leg to stand on with this law ... I feel like legitimate laws need to be created instead of these ridiculous laws ... create laws to protect our children, protect our hard working men and women, protect us from gas gauging and increasing food prices ... What about these things, the necessities?!?!?!
