Proposal To Ban Mountaintop Removal Mining Dies In TN House

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee House panel has killed a
legislative proposal to ban most mountaintop removal mining in that
state.

The House Environment Subcommittee voted 5-3 against the
proposal.

The measure sought to ban surface coal mining within 100 feet of
rivers and streams, or if it alters ridgelines in elevations above
2,000 feet.

The proposal pitched environmentalists against the coal industry
in extensive debate in House and Senate committees.

A state senator says he still intends to seek a vote on a
similar bill in the Senate.

Similar debates have occurred in both Kentucky's and West
Virginia's legislatures this year with the same results.
