Gillispie: Jasper May Leave UK

It was billed as an “end of the season opportunity” for reporters to ask questions of UK Basketball coach Billy Gillispie, but one bit of news was anything but routine.

Gillispie said that guard Derrick Jasper is considering transferring to another school. Gillispie said that he'd heard the rumors about Jasper's homesickness since he arrived at Kentucky.

Gillispie says should he return and if his knee is back to 100%, Jasper could be an all-Southeastern Conference player.

If Jasper goes home to California, Kentucky would be extremely thin at the guard position.

Two starters, Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford, have graduated. Jodie Meeks underwent surgery earlier this month to repair a bilateral sports hernia, and of course, freshman phenom Patrick Patterson is recovering from a stress fracture.

In one other bit of news, Gillispie said it was also likely that freshman Morakinyo Williams would be transferring to a place where he could get more playing time.

The UK coach also briefly dismissed as rumor the speculation that Oklahoma State had targeted him to coach the Cowboys. Former Wildcat Travis Ford will be introduced as the Cowboys new coach Thursday afternoon.

Well I for one would not hold a bit of ill will against a young man for doing what he feels he must do. I am so disapointed at times with Kentucky fans. As long as the coach and players do as "you fans" want them to do, then you love them to no end. However, a young man is dealing with a personal crisis and "you fans" treat him like a monster. Derrick I say this, "Do what you feel is right in your heart. God will take care of those who look to him and seek guidance. Pray on your issue and then do what you need to." I will always wish you well no matter where you play. Do not let "those fans" get you down. They treated Rick Patino the same way after all he did for the program. Kentucky basketball is a great thing but it's fans try to control everything about it. The only thing "those fans" who critisize constant care about are what they want. Thank you for the 2 seasons I have seen you play for Kentucky, I hope to see you back in blue next year. If not though, good luck!

As a kentucky fan i am dissapointed because kentucky basketball is without a doubt the ultimatum of the college basketball world, it doesnt get any better than this. Granted there is alot of pressure on billy to live up to the exspectations but you know what......he needs to live up to it. Im tired of not winning the SEC tourny like we should every year and im absolutely disgusted that we cant make it out of the first round in the NCAA tourny. Im not in anyway hating on the UK players they did what they were told and if Billy would put as much time and effort into his coaching as he does at (edited) he would be the next wooden. Im embarrased and am affended at how he has stained the universitys image and im only in high school folks, i can do better than him with one hand behind my back. Thats some harsh comments but ya know what.....i speek for kentucky when saying WE HAVE TO BE BACK ON TOP.........YA DIG

If he wants to go let him. The can use the scholarship for someone who wants to be there. It's not like Jasper is the greatest basketball player on the planet. The young man must do what he wants if that is leave then leave he must.

Cut the kid a little slack. If he wants to play elsewhere, thank him for his years with UK, and wish him luck in the future.

If he does leave, he is throwing away any chance he may have of playing for the NBA. When he leaves Kentucky he will have to sit out a year before he can play. He is will not have enough time to prove himself as being worthy of an NBA offer. But in my opinion, let him go. The best is yet to come, just give Billy some time. Rome was not built in a day.

Playing with heart is needed, but without talent you have no chance. AND WHO CARES ABOUT HEARING MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME WHEN YOUR NOT A NATIVE TO KY!!!??? Jasper is decent and plays hard, but not a championship caliber player. Give Kentucky and Bill G time to load up, may take 2-3 more years before KY returns to being a powerhouse.

Standing at midcourt while My Old Kentucky Home plays is worth sticking around for???? Is that all it takes? Jeez guy, get a life and get a grip and get your priorities straight. Sure, that's the reason kids want to play at KY; to listen to My Old Kentucky Home....LOL! You goof!
