KCTCS Students Face Double Digit Tuition Hike

Another proposed tuition increase for Kentucky's sixteen community and technical colleges is the largest percentage of any state post-secondary institution for the coming school year.

Students could face a 13 percent tuition increase next fall, if approved by the Council on Postsecondary Education.

The Kentucky community and technical college system's Board of Regents approved the proposed increase on Thursday.

UK officials are meeting with students Friday afternoon to discuss the university's planned tuition hike. Administrators approved a nine percent increase last week, but that still has to be approved by the state.

EKU, WKU and U of L students are all also likely to face at least an 8% tuition hike next fall.

I agree with Steve, we are loosing good students with these tuition hikes. I have been in Kentucky for over 20 years and I have seen the educational system. It's 20 years behind compared with other states. We are loosing bringht young minds and most of them will leave the state to go to schools out of state or find jobs out of state. We need to rethink before we give students such a huge tuition increase.

Remember, our community colleges is where the vast majority of our students in the state start out college, and either finish, quit, or transfer to one of the bigger schools. When you make it so unaffordable that even the poor kids can't go to college, this state has nowhere to go but backwards. If there was somewhere in postsecondary ed that should've been spared cuts, it should've been the community college system.
