UK Trustees Want 9% Tuition Hike, May Not Get It

University of Kentucky trustees want to raise tuition nine percent for the fall semester, but they may not get what they want.

The Board of Trustees met Wednesday to approve the tuition hike.

But, the president of the Council on Postsecondary Education says the yearly increases of colleges in Kentucky are getting impossible for many to afford.

President Brad Cowgill says it's the job of the council to monitor the affordability of tuition.

They plan to meet with all colleges this Friday, and have a decision on the increases by Monday.

The reason student go to UK because it's close to home and the tuition was affordable. I don't see any reason for students to stay in Kentucky and go to UK. There are plenty of good out of state University's where they can spend their money and probably get a better education. The administrative need to think that we are going to loose great students because of the cost. It's an investment to us if our students stay in Kentucky and get Kentucky jobs. It's good for our economy and good for Kentucky. But there are too many greedy people at UK to realize that our students are the most important assets!!!!

We are spending waaaaay too much on coaches salaries and high paid administrators. We need a university here in southeastern Kentucky that can accomodate all of our educational needs. We send our kids to Lexington, and we pay all this tuition, and rent, and allied costs, and it is just too much for many to afford. I say NO to another tuition raise. Tighten your belt, UK. Everybody else is.

Thank you BRAD. I agree the University HAS to make money also....they have to pay their wonderful employees and take care of all the business of running a University. However, what about us...the students. What happens when the day comes we can NO LONGER afford to go to college??? There has to be a way to control the tuition prices so folks can still afford an education. Have a nice day!

if times wasnt bad enough they raise the cost of education with 1 daughter going to EKU now an another starting next semester looks like im going to have to expand the farm an take on another job but it could be worse i guess our kids should be able to continue their education but i guess our goverment has better things to spend OUR money on than to help with our kids future

As a student at the University of Kentucky, the tuition increase is outrageous. The tuition right now is high enough..and increasing every year. Eventually, school will no longer be affordable to most students. UK needs to find other ways to cut back to make up for budget cuts.
