High School Principal Injured While Breaking Up A Fight

A fight at an eastern Kentucky high school leaves two students in jail and a principal recovering.

It happened Tuesday at Buckhorn High School in Perry County.

Police say the fight sent the principal to the hospital and left the two boys involved, behind bars.

State police are now investigating the fight that broke out between two students after the principal was injured while trying to break it up.

The two students are in a juvenile detention center; one on charges of paying another student to start the fight.

Principal Harvey Colwell says Buckhorn High School in Perry County is a small and peaceful school with just more than 200 students.

Around 11am Tuesday morning the staff put the school on lockdown after a fight broke-out. One that left Colwell injured.

“There was nothing intentionally done to me, I was not assaulted in any way it just happened that I got caught in the shuffle,” Colwell said.

State Police arrived at the school after Colwell went to the hospital.

Their investigation revealed there was more than just 2 students involved in the fight.

“Preliminary investigation indicated that a juvenile that attended school there paid another juvenile at the school to assault an 18 year old which was also a student at that school,” Trooper Tony Watts said.

State police charged one juvenile with assault in the 3rd degree and the other juvenile with solicitation to commit assault.

Officials say the 18 year old student was not hurt in the fight.

“School violence is something that hits home to everyone because our kids are our future and we all want to protect our kids,” Trooper Watts said.

The two juveniles are being held in the juvenile detention center in Breathitt County.

My friend was involved in this and I personally think that you should keep your opinions to yourself. I do not think that the punishment was fair, and thats what I think. So, think what you want to think. If you have any negative things to say, please do not type it. The principal was a brave person, but he even admits that he wasn't intentionally hit. So, I don't think that it should be dropped. Please let them out! =[

Brave man...the principal!! He had to be brave to try to break up that fight or maybe a little crazy?? Call the cops and let them go to jail..don't ever jump in like that... Maybe we should pay a bonus for "combat pay" to all teachers and principals. Parents need to get their head together and teach these kids how to behave!! They are a product of their environment...they come from a "HOUSE OF HOODLUMS" obviously!

Well seems like we have 1 opinion against spanking. I was raised to respect my elders myself. With todays laws the way they are my parents would still be in jail.Today the switch the belt or even a good old tail whipping with your hand a land you in jail. THEN WE WONDER why kids are the way they are. SPARE THE ROD SPOIL THE CHILD[USE THE ROD TEACH YOUR CHILD].Then pack your tooth brush you are gone to jail

To Wow in Richmond, for your information I am a parent of three children. One in college and two in high school and you know what, they have never been in ANY trouble over fighting or being disrecpectful to other kids or adults. They were raised with the knowledge that if they fought at school or anywhere else when they got home they would get spanked. When my kids were younger they could go to anyones home and the parents would beg for them to stay longer hoping my kids behavior would rub off on their kids. It is all in how you raise your kids and the way you teach them to behave in public! Also attending church WITH your kids makes a huge difference. I am not saying to beat your kids, but a nice firm swat when they misbehave gets their attention. This not being able to disipline kids now a days is the reason the jails are so full. They think they can get away with anything and a lot of parents let them.

@all before me. These kids were fighting and the best you come up with is hitting them to teach them better? Great way to prove your the type to have kids that result to hitting to solve their problems. Real smart people. Lets start giving car stereos to theives while we are at it. Ever think of letting them deal it out without threatining them further? It worked for decades before fools started arresting kids for fist fights.

I agree, the children need to be punished ,but in todays society if a child is corrected by being spanked it's the parents that get in trouble. not the child that is why the jails are so full , the law will not let the parents correct there children the way the child needs to be corrected.

Won't be long and we'll have metal detectors set up for the kids to go through to enter school, and police officers patroling the hallways during the school day. That's how it is in Florida, it's getting worse-all because we aren't supposed to spank our kids due to fear of being arrested for child abuse. Tell you what, MY parents spanked me, and I turned out just fine-graduated top 5 in high school. If the "powers that be" would quit telling us to stop punishing our children, maybe as parents we could stop this stuff before it happens! Hey Ralph, Jules-I agree with you-warm their butts!! maybe they'll smarten up a bit!!
