Convicted Babysitter To Be Released Today

We're learning more details about the release of a woman, convicted of leaving a child to die in a hot car.

11-month-old Bryan Puckett died in July of 1999. Now, nearly 9 years later, his babysitter is about to be a free woman.

William and Michelle Puckett found out Tuesday, their former baby sitter, Karen Murphy, would be released from prison this week.

The Lexington woman left Puckett and her own son inside a locked car at a shopping center. It's estimated temperatures reached between 145 and 165 degrees in the car. Murphy's son survived, but Bryan Puckett died. The case led state lawmakers to pass Bryan's Law which stiffened penalties for leaving children unattended in cars.

Murphy was sentenced to 13 years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter, criminal abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Corrections officials tell us Murphy has served eight years of that sentence. Her release is based on a number of conditions, including time off for good behavior. She wont on probation or parole.

The Puckett's tell 27NEWSFIRST they were upset about finding out about her release less than 48 hours before it happens. The state says their system of notification only requires victims' families to be notified in advance of the release but there is no specific time table.

Stop the madness. Don said his opinion. This is a free world of expression and an open forum. I am sorry for the Pucketts. I am sorry for the Mom who killed their kid. But I am really sorry that you all don't get the point. Many of us are tired of the milking publicity. BRIAN'S LAW is a good thing. Just move on.

This is to L she did kill the child not by her hand but she did not take the child out. She killed it and should pay the price. She has her child but the Pucketts dont. So you say she did not kill this child. I think you need a head check. You are just like Don cold and heartless. You dont care about anyone but YOU!!!

If God is the only one who will ultimately give punishment, then please explain why we have a judicial system and jails? Makes no sense. Stupid people shouldn't be allowed to comment let alone own a computer.

Yes this was a horrible experience for these people to go through. I would never want anyone to have to go through with what they have been through. But when everyone is talking about what should be done to this lady you are putting youself in the place of God. God is the one who will ultimatly give the punishment to all.

A mistake was made when Ms. Murphy used prescription drugs that had an effect on her judgment. That was the mistake. She didn't kill anyone. She made a mistake that resulted in the death of an individual. It's called manslaughter.

This post is in reference to the one from "SmarterThanYou." Leaving a child in a hot car to die was a mistake?? How stupid are you? A mistake is putting down the wrong answer on a test; a mistake is grabbing the salt shaker versus the pepper shaker when seasoning your food. The definition of mistake in the dictionary states "A misconception or misunderstanding. To understand wrongly. To identify incorrectly." Please tell me how that equates to leaving an infant in a hot car to die while she went shopping! This was clearly gross negligence and irresponsible behavior for someone who was entrusted to care for another person's child. Yes and I know she even left her own child in the car, so what does that tell you about her? For someone to get out early for "good behavior" after killing a helpless infant is beyond reasoning for me. That child doesn't get a second chance. Just put yourself in the shoes of the Puckett family and I know you won't feel the way you do now. Stupid people!

All you sheep bringing up "God"...where was your god when this baby was suffering in that car? Why is it always some comfort after the fact?

Our prayers go out to the Puckett family! May God give you strength through this. I could not imagine your pain. I think she should had to spend the rest of her life in prison for what she did. Keep praying and looking to God. May God Bless you!
