A serious accident closes a heavily traveled eastern Kentucky highway Thursday.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon on highway 15 in northern Perry County. Police say a car swerved into oncoming traffic and hit a coal truck.

Investigation by Kentucky State Police indicates that Katherine Jones, the operator of the car, lost control crossed over into the other lane of traffic and struck the coal truck operated by Reed Brewer. The passenger in the car, Carl E. Powell of Hazard, was transported to the Hazard ARH where he was pronounced deceased. Powell was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.

Michael and myself knew Carl for only a short time, but had seemed like we had known him forever. He was a great guy with a big heart. He was a great guitar player and song writer. Words can't express how in shock we are. We love him and will miss him dearly!

by the looks of the coal truck. the driver had pull off as far as he could to keep from having an accident. there is no truck driver wants to see this kind of accident, just think what this driver and family is going through knowing that a young boys life was taken.

MY PRAYERS GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY

I have know Carl Everett Powell ever since he was born. He was a very sweet and pleasant boy whom I liked very much. He leaves behind a very loving family. His mother Caroline is the best person that you would ever want to meet. She is a manager at the Airport Garden's Save-A-Lot...His dad Harold is very nice also. His maternal grandparents Carl and Geneva Pollard & his paternal grandparents Nick & Leona Combs are really nice. He also has 3 very sweet and loving aunts, and I know that all their hearts are broken, and I wish that I could fix it, but it just ain't possible. I know how they feel because I lost my only son at age 19 years of age, and there is nothing more painful.. My heart goes out to all the family. I love them very much and they will be in my prayers, and I want them to remember that I trully care and I will be here for them if they should need me.. Love You Guy,Rhoda Miller
