Less than a week after the death of Derby runner-up Eight Belles, there's already a movement to pay tribute to her.

There's an online petition that is aimed at getting Churchill Downs to ring a bell eight times before the Kentucky Derby next year.

Filly eight belles broke both her ankles after Saturday's race and had to be put down on the track. Her death prompted PETA to call for the suspension of the horse's jockey and trainer.

If you'd like more information about the petition or want to sign it yourself, follow the link below.

The ringing of the bell 8 times is only a fraction of what can be done to honor such a gentle soul. What about a plaque at Churchill or a memorial for horses that run in any of the Triple Crown races that lose their lives/or may die because of a life threatening injury while running. These gentle creature go out and lay it all on the line race after race life or death. Lets remember them the way they should be. May Eight Bells rest in peace.

I think it would be a wonderful idea to ring the bells 8 times next year. She was a beautiful horse who deserves to never should be forgotten.

She shows just how big those horses hearts are. They will give you all they have even if it leads to their injury or death. We were so proud that a filly made it to the derby. Can't something be done? The horses are young and still have soft bones. Ring the bells for her please...

Eight bells need to ring before the Preakness and Belmont this year and before every Kentucky Derby beginning in 2009! As racing fans, we need this reminder of a beautiful animal, what she represented to the sport, and the challenge to indeed make racing a safer business. It is time to breed for endurance as well as speed. It is time Ring those bells

Just remember 8 bells--you are better than they will ever be. The horses are better than the people.

I am all for the petition to honor Eight Belles. Eight bells ringing in her memory, what a way to honor the filly. Let's do it!

The photo that accompanies this article is absolutely heartbreaking. Seeing her on her knees, unable to stand, and obviously in pain, makes me weep. How sad for all of us that we lost such a gallant soul.
