LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A bridge that carries Interstate 65 across the Ohio River between Louisville and New Albany, Ind., has finally been painted.
The job took 9 years, four contractors and cost four times its initial estimate.
A bridge inspector went to prison, convicted of extortion, and two previous contractors settled their lawsuits against the state for $12 million.
The Kennedy Bridge was originally to get a colorful coating of burgundy, tan and hunter green paint.
The last contractor to get the job finished it. Intech Contracting of Lexington painted it beige and got two $500,000 bonuses for finishing the work early.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said the final tally was about $60 million. Of that, Intech was paid $37.6 million.

$60 million to paint a bridge. A PERFECT example of the work done year in and year out by the KY dept of transportation. Waste and more waste. Go by any job they are doing, and you will see supervisors sitting in their truck doing nothing and more. We taxpayers ABHORE the continual monies that go down the drain. Oh yeah, I heard a story lately...I heard that there is going to be a big lay-off in the transportation department...the Japanese have invented a shovel that will stand up by itself! May as well laugh, nobody has done anything to dry taxpayers tears. I predict that the "underground economy" where people work for cash will grow. People don't want to work, pay taxes, and see them wasted. Why work all week, not have enough $ to pay the bills, feed the family, and see this waste of OUR money? There seems to be a taxpayer revolution on the horizon. You guys in Frankfort had better start working TOGETHER to FIX some of this stuff or YOU"RE FIRED!!!
