Democratic U. S. Senate Rivals Hold Unity Gathering

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - With a raucous Democratic primary campaign behind them, one-time political foes Bruce Lunsford and Greg Fischer said Friday they will work together to defeat four-term Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell.

Lunsford defeated Fischer on Tuesday in what appeared to be a divisive campaign between two men who had known each other for more than 20 years.

With the election behind him, Fischer offered his support to Lunsford on Friday, praising him as "a man of action" who sees "an optimistic future" for the nation.

"It's time to bring our party together and begin the long and ultimately successful march to retire Mitch McConnell to the private sector," Fischer said during a rally at Kentucky Democratic Party headquarters in Frankfort on Friday.

In the final weeks leading up to Tuesday's primary, Fischer pummeled Lunsford with television ads criticizing him for his stewardship of a troubled health care company and for once providing political support to a former Republican governor.

Lunsford struck back with an ad claiming Fischer and his family contributed to GOP candidates and that Fischer presided over a company that was fined for unsafe working conditions.
