Whitley County Murder Suspect Claims Self-Defense In Shooting

Richard Adams admits to being at a house in the Rockholds community Tuesday night and he even admits to shooting and killing Jesse Graves, but he says it was no crime.

“It was self defense to the bone. I am not guilty of murder and I do not belong in this cage,” Adams told 27 NEWSFIRST from the Whitley County Jail Wednesday.

Police say both Adams and the victim, Graves, where at the house. Two women and a child were also there. Adams says one of the women had invited him there. Police say the two men were arguing over one of the women. Adams says Graves was touching her inappropriately and that's when he told him to stop and pushed him back.

“Everything was going smooth. Jesse came in was acting all all crazy...raw, raw, raw, and I had the gun and I said ‘you better stop.’ He's on steroids and I said you better stop...and he's a big guy. Are you going to fight a big guy like that?” said Adams.

Graves was shot and he was pronounced dead on the scene. Adams also says he thinks Graves has been out to get him for ten years, because Adams says he testified against one of Graves’ friends in a murder trial then.

Richie and Jessee were both pill popping, pot smoking crack head alocholics. Self Defense??? Where does that come in. Richie said on the news that Jesse was out to get him, then why the heck go to his house.. That is where this all happened. Sorry, I don't see murder as justifiable for inapproiately touching someone. Now if he was chocking her or stabbing her yeah I could see. But why not call the cops and get her some help instead of killing the guy in front of a kid. They were both sleazy. But Richie if you are going to do the crime, be a MAN admit it and do the TIME!!

WOW in Richmond: I realize that you don't have to reason to carry a gun, but one must have a complex that is a little on the short side to think that they have to carry a gun in order to feel BIG!!!!! It is those that carry a gun and have "little man syndrome" that causes many deaths due to stupidity in this world. In my opinion and I am entitled to one "Shooting a man in the back of the head is a cowardly act!!!!!!!!!!!" Mr. Adams was not man enough to leave the area and preserve his own life (Being in prison or jail is no kind of life) and I a TAX Payer am going to be helping to pay for this one man's stupidity (Prisons cost are not free). I realize that one can go where ever they choose but I for one value my life and the life's of my children and loved ones enough to leave an area if I feel that there may be reason to have concern..... I stick by my statement "No one was the winner in this situation/controntation"..So WOW put that in your pipe and smoke it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow in Richmond: Do you have something against our kids? Everyone who has kids wants them to survive, you must not have any and if you do I feel sorry for them. Did your parents mistreat you as a child? Now, all I can say about this story is this: If I knew someone had been out to get me for 10 years I would not have been at a social gathering, rubbing elbows with such a person I don't care who had invited me. I would not have went in there if I was escorted by a SWAT TEAM! Why do grown people rely on partying, drinking, drugs and associating themselves with "trash" to have a good time? Anytime you have all this going on combined with someone that is "out to get you" there is going to be trouble!

I think it is a shame that things had to happen this way for two guys I knew for quiet some time now. I know that in my experences with dealing with the firewater (wiskey, alcohol)and hipped up tempers that truthfully both guys packed around often. But in both of thier defence, thats the way the were raised, because around here magority is redneck, and don't care to let it show. I hate it and will miss both of them, cause as shamefull as it is they are really both gone.

Is everyone gone stupid? It is NOT self defense if you shoot someone in the back of the head. Jesse was family and he did not deserve that. He might have had his flaws but he was a good person. So you need to get the facts straight before saying crap.

@anonymous Location: Somerset and @Anonymous Location: Maysville in this state you dont have to have a reason to carry a gun. you just have to have a lisence. So you (edited) need to realise that its the right of citizens to be armed. It didnt say he brought the gun for that purpose now did it? It was probally there for self defence of any time needed just liek it was used. Also @ anon somerset again In this state you dont have to leave a place that you feel threatened as long as your legally allowed to be there, but I sure more liberals like you want people shot in the back so people like your kids can survive anotehr day right?

Where is the self defense? I do not see any statements where Graves was the attacker of Adams. Murder is murder. If he was causing the woman trouble she should have called the police.
