Violent Crash on Mountain Parkway Injures Two

A couple continues to recover Wednesday night after a violent crash on the Mountain Parkway.

According to drivers who witnessed this afternoon's crash in Powell County, the driver lost control of his pickup truck. EMS crews had to use the jaws of life to cut the couple out of their vehicle. Jimmy Dale Barnett and Marenda Barnett were taken to the hospital by helicopter. Hospital officials tell 27NEWSFIRST that Jimmy Barnett is listed in critical condition.

The driver directly behind the couple's truck says he didn't know what was going on because it happened so quickly.

That pickup truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash. But hundreds of drivers were stranded on the parkway for more than 2 hours while police investigated the incident.

they were not going 90 mph!! that is my sister and brother-in-law, there was a smoke stack laying in the road, that a semi had lost off his truck, and it had been laying there for 2 weeks, kind of makes you wonder what the state highway workers are doing!! thats what caused this wreck, he swerved to miss it, and the truck hit it, and the guard rail and flipped!! my brother-in-law is in ICU and is still in critical condition, and my sister has alot going on too!! but speed was not a factor in this wreck, it was because of junk laying in the road!!!

This is also my aunt and uncle. I have not got to see any of them yet because my uncle’s condition is really bad. They were not speeding by any means. My uncle swerved to miss a very large object in the road but instead ended up hitting it instead. Not for sure yet, what the object was, something like a muffler maybe, but not for certain so, I do not want to say for sure. I ask everyone, to please keep them in your prayers. Thanks.

fnord: 90 miles an hour is breaking the law, regardless if we can drive that fast or not. And at 90 miles an hour, how much gas are you wasting? Especially with the price of gas now, everyone should be slowing down. Hope the couple are okay. Looked horrible on the news.

Gwen, you must be like 90 years old -- as 90mph really isn't all that fast on the parkway. Most drivers and most cars are easily able to handle that speed. I'm just surprised there wasn't a cop involved this time chasing someone at 140mph through two counties...and then causing an accident.

Jessica, I hope your aunt and uncle are doing better today and will soon be home with you and your family. I saw the truck they were in being towed through town last night, all I can say is it made me weak to see that and they are very lucky to be alive. God bless your aunt, uncle and your whole family.
