WVU Mining Extension, Director Win Mine Safety Award

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia University's Mining
Extension Service and Director Jim Dean have won a worldwide safety

The International Society of Mine Safety Professionals honored
Dean and WVU with the H.L. Boling Above and Beyond the Call of Duty
Award for making mines safer workplaces. One organization is
selected from nominees around the world for the award annually.

H.L. Boling says WVU and Dean have demonstrated outstanding
dedication to safety and health.

Dean took over the extension service in 1995. As interim
director of the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training
for eight months in 2006, Dean oversaw the creation of regulations
implementing safety changes required by the Legislature after the
fatal Sago Mine explosion and Aracoma Alma No. 1 Mine fire.
