Hazard Receives Grant for Hospice Facility

FRANKFORT, KY (May 30, 2008) – Gov. Steve Beshear, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office for Local Development (GOLD), has awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the city of Hazard for the construction of a 20,000 sq. ft. inpatient Hospice facility.

The new facility will be operated by Hospice of the Bluegrass - Mountain Community. The proposed design will have 12 rooms for patients with adequate space for visitors and additional area for family members to stay overnight. The building will also contain dining facilities and support service offices.

“We want these patient rooms to be very serene, similar to a home setting,” said Monica Couch, Director of the Hospice of the Bluegrass – Mountain Community. “Our goal is to make the end of life experience as comfortable as possible when symptoms require the constant presence of a nurse and the availability of a physician.”

Hospice predicts that at least 30 new jobs will be created to staff the new inpatient unit. Care will be provided by a team of professionals that will include a chaplain, medical director, nursing assistants, pharmacist, primary care physician, registered nurses and a social worker in addition to clerical and management staff.

Kentucky’s U. S. Congressional leaders’ continued support of the CDBG program has made the funding available nationally as well as within the commonwealth. The state’s CDBG program is managed by GOLD and funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Approved grants are used to assist counties and cities in revitalizing neighborhoods, expanding affordable housing and economic opportunities, providing infrastructure and/or improving community facilities and services.
