Wife Of Late Magistrate Was Sworn In As His Replacement

She suddenly lost her husband one week ago and now she's taking over his duties as Perry County Magistrate.

Kentucky State Police say Jerry Fugate shot and killed 1st District Magistrate Jimmy Darrell Neace and country road department employee Lew Allen Caudill at a store in Chavies last Friday, Fugate then killed himself.

Governor Beshear appointed Neace's wife to replace him.

Judge Executive Denny Ray Noble says he believes Audrey Neace will be the first woman to be appointed or elected magistrate in Perry County.

Jimmy Darrell Neace's widow, Audrey Neace was sworn in as magistrate in the Perry County Hall of Justice.

Officials say there is no better person to replace her late husband than his wife of 10 years.

“I think appointing his wife and letting her finish up his projects. I think is the right thing to do,” Judge Noble said.

With dozens of onlookers Perry County Judge Bill Engle swore in Neace.

She didn't feel comfortable talking on camera, but did tell us that Jimmy Darrell would have wanted her to step in for him.

People who came to the ceremony say they will continue to pray for the families involved in last week's tragedy.

Officials say they have no doubt, Audrey Neace will be another asset to the community.
