KU Substations Hit By Copper Thieves

Lexington Police are investigating a late Tuesday night copper theft at a Kentucky Utilities substation.

Police say thieves got away with copper and also caused property damage at the substation on Old Iron Works Road.

There was also damage to some equipment.

As far as investigators know, no one was hurt and no power outages resulted from the theft.

Investigators think the same person or people also hit other substations in Lexington and Paris. That's partly because the thefts have happened in the same way, at the same time of night.

KU officials say this money making scheme is a dangerous one because the thieves are working with and around high voltage equipment.

KU should know by know that desperate people do stupid things and not all of them are on drugs. Some of them might be trying to feed their family or buy a gallon of gas. With the weather being as hot as it is, it seems like it would be smart to place a guard at the isolated substations.

No grumpy we don't need to put the scrap yard owners in jail. My husband and I have had old copper at our house that we have recycled for money. But it was at OUR house and was found when we renovated. People need to quit being lazy and expecting someone else to pay for them and get a job.

It is amazing that these people are just smart enough to steal cooper without getting fried but I bet they are too dumb/lazy to get a job. If only people would use their energy for real good. Get a life!! I am tired of my rates going up because someone is looking to make a quick dollar!

I wish the next person who steals copper from the electric company gets electrocuted. That would curb the thefts also the scrap yard should find out if the person selling copper owns it before they are paid.

Gas theft will replace copper theft soon if the prices keep on rising. Copper thieves will have to steal gas just to take their stolen copper to the scrap yard to sale. Viscious Cylce indeed
