Ed. Chief Admits Using Bad Judgment With Car Purchase

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Education Commissioner Jon Draud says he
used bad judgment in having the state buy him a Chrysler 300 car
with $13,000 in upgrades.
Draud was speaking at the Kentucky Board of Education meeting
Wednesday morning and addressed the controversial automobile
purchase. Draud said he regrets any problems he caused the board,
but stopped short of apologizing for his actions.
Draud said he hopes to move past the vehicle purchase.
Draud ordered a 2008 Chrysler 300 with a base price of $18,101.
Options including an engine upgrade, global positioning system and
a handsfree telephone pushed the price to more than $30,000.

I agree with all of you who are mentioning the fancy law enforcement vehicles. I was told last year by our sheriff in Richmond that the dept. can't even afford to buy cruisers for all of the force. Yet, there is a bright, shiny, sticking-out-like-a-sore-thumb dodge charger gas guzzler with the words "MADISON CO SHERIFF" that can be seen from miles away strutting itself around Madison Co and I-75. The windows are closed on most of these cruisers with the A/C running when it is 60 degrees outside. I do NOT want my tax dollars going to this. The dept. wouldn't help my family at all when we were burglarized, because, "we don't even have the funds to provide cruisers for all of our officers." You are right on for bringing this point to the surface, and I commend you. Yes, this happens on every level of government and until we get really mad and do something about it, it will only continue to happen. REVOLUTION, BABY!

I don't know anything about this guy but...wouldn't an education commissioner for the state have to travel all over the state and if so, wouldn't it be beneficial for him to have GPS and hands-free phone for his job? Now, the engine upgrade is likely just vanity (ego) on his part probably, and should come out of his pocket instead of ours.

I have noticed a law enforcement officer in Versailles who drives a maroon/tan King Ranch F-150 with lights. This is a $45,000 truck. Who paid for it? They could have bought 2, maybe 3 base level trucks for the price this one cost! People should vote for the non-incumbant every time and just keep turning them over to combat corruption.

A GPS system? Isn't he intelligent enough to use a map? Bad judgement my (edited)! He is greedy and got caught at it. Just another coddled government stooge.

FIRE HIM. FIRE HIM. If I or any of the people reading these comments committed 10% of Draud's actions, we would be fired immediately. The KY pension system is on the brink of bankruptcy and our elected/appointed officials use our funds to spoil themselves. I have to drive the most fuel-efficient car I can afford to make ends meet and these guys go out and buy a 8-cylinder HEMI. Go Green Kentucky and fire Draud the FRAUD...and everyone like him.

Guess who appointed Draud right before he left office??? ERNIE FLETCHER. So you can't blame Beshear, and Beshear has no control over his actions because he's been appointed and approved by the REPUBLICAN Senate. So he can waste all he wants, and the only way Beshear can affect him is to cut his budget, which would only be passed onto the kids, Draud would not let it affect his office. I think it's a travesty that he can't drive a Chevy Impala base model like another Cabinet Secretary I know does and he gave up an Expedition that the former one (Nighbert) drove because he said it wasn't needed. He is saving hundreds of gallons and thousands of dollars because he knows that what he drives has nothing to do with how well he does his job, as long as it gets him from point A to point B. I wished Draud had the same kind of ethics, morals, and common sense that some of Beshear's appointees have...oh wait, he was a FLETCHER appointee, they didn't have any sense.

I THINK THE WHOLE SCHOOL SYSTEM STINKS, AND I'M TIRED OF THE SCHOOL TAXES PAYING FOR THINGS LIKE THIS. SCHOOL TAXES SHOULD BE SPENT ON THE CHILDREN, NOT THE OFFICIALS IN WHATEVER OFFICE THEY BROUGHT OR SUCKED THEIR WAY INTO. AND, THEIR SALARIES SHOULD BE CUT, NOT THE TEACHERS. AND ANYONE THAT MAKES SUCH BAD DECISIONS AND ADMITS TO IT IS NOT QUALIFIED TO HOLD ANY OFFICE--UNLESS HE HAS AN OFFICE THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE HIM TO MAKE ANY DECISIONS. I BET IT TOOK HIM DAYS TO DECIDE WHAT COLOR CAR HE WANTED. STUPID-- STUPID-- STUPID

Is this anymore shocking than the local police and sheriff departments buying $30k dodge chargers to seem more stylish, modern, intimidating?, or whatever. There are plenty of ways to spend out money more wisely.
