McCreary County Minister Cleared of Manslaughter Charges

A jury acquitted southern Kentucky minister of all charges in connection with a deadly crash.

Claude Davis is experiencing a sense of relief , but it's not as if he's celebrating a big victory.

“Still, there was a young lady who lost her life and I have that to live with the rest of my life,” said Davis.

Davis was charged with manslaughter because prosecutors said he caused a crash in June of last year that killed Abigail Marler. But after hearing several hours of evidence, a jury didn't buy that charge.

“Like a sense of relief that I'm not going to jail. But there's still that feeling of grief,” he said.

Prosecutors said they had evidence that Davis was driving in a reckless manner when the accident happened. Davis says he remembers very little.

After his arraignment, Marler's family said they wanted Davis to be held accountable.

“I think that from the way way we heard he was driving, he should be charged, be indicted,” said Lorella Wood, a relative of Marler's in an interview in October of 2007.

“Grief takes all forms and I take no fault or ill feelings for the family of Abby or any of their relatives. It's a tragic loss,” said Davis.
