Police Chief's Widow Files Lawsuit

The widow of slain Clay City Police Chief Randy Lacy has filed a civil lawsuit against the city and his alleged killer, Jamie Barnett.

According to the Clay City Times, Ruth Lacy's lawsuit claimed the city "failed at providing sufficient police protection to and for the city."

The suit seeks monetary damages, but doesn't say how much.

The Clay City Times reports the city's attorney declined comment but said he was surprised by the suit.

The lawsuit was filed on June 12, one day before the one-year anniversary of Randy Lacy's death.

Jamie Barnett is set to go on trial for murder in July.

This is just a silly lawsuit. I understand and sympathize with Mrs. Lacy in the fact that she misses her late husband and with the whole Lacy family, but Randy knew what being a police officer meant - that maybe someday he could possibly get into a situation that would cost him his life. Police officers do this everyday all over the world. I know a lot more counties that have understaffed policemen. I don't know what she's going to accomplish by following through with this lawsuit.

to everyone that has posted, i don't agree with this law suit either but then again i think they should stop bringing the death of Randy up all the time. He isn't the first policeman to get killed and he won't be the last. i know his family loves him and misses him, but still. and for not surprised in prestonsburg, didn't your momma teach it was RUDE to call people stupid?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I am sure she is doing what someone or many someone's told her to do.

I am sorry for what happened but this was an officer who should have known the risk with the job. Thats why more people choose other careers. He was the chief. It should have been up to him to have more training. We should not have to pay for a costly mistake made by him. She should drop the lawsuit and let it go.

She should have never listened to the lawyer. It takes away any sympathy that a widow/widower deserves. I thought Ca. was bad about frivolous lawsuits. And to the first post, she has "her future" in insurance and pensions. Why do taxpayers of Clay City need to give her a "future"?

Just another case of someone who thinks money is going to make it all better. It's no wonder Kentucky has the reputation it does, stupid people like this woman. I'm sorry that she lost her husband but there's no use trying to hurt others just because you are hurting. Sounds like it was the police chief's fault anyway.

Shouldn't this lawsuit have been filed while the Chief was still alive?

    Now here's a surprise

I believe remembering when this tragey happened, Chief Lacy did not handcuff Barnett, or did Chief Lacy use the protocol of arresting Barnett, because Chief Lacy was a dedicated officer who often did not handcuff individuals he knew and not taking his guard now. This tragedy was a great lost! However the wife filing suit one year later to the city not providing sufficient protection, Chief Lacy CHOSE NOT TO USE THE PROVIDED PROTECTION! His wife has got problems!

I guess they should have seen this one coming. Most families of family officials do file suit when things like this happen.

SHot with his own gun he left where any person in his car could get it. yet the wife wants money because there wasnt more cops. No wonder the rest of the world thinks this countrys a joke.
