EKU Fraternity Suspended

A fraternity is now on suspension after a hazing incident on Eastern Kentucky University's campus.

Kappa Alpha Psi was suspended from the EKU campus for eight years.

Last week, Richmond Police arrested 21-year old Thomas Barnes. Police say he and other members of the fraternity beat a pledge with a paddle and cane multiple times back in March.

23-year old Brent Whiteside spent several days in the hospital recovering from injuries he received. Police are still looking for several other members of the chapter also accused of beating Whiteside.

The Kappa Alpha Psi national office has not yet released the findings of its investigation surrounding this event. However, the executive director of Kappa Alpha Psi, Richard Snow says "we are in full support of the university's position on this matter."

ok so first of all. white frats do this too so race isnt an issue. second the school has nothing to do with it bcuz the frats will do whatever they want behind closed doors. i was in a sorority at EKU and it was the best experience of my life but we didnt haze though. it is a common tradition among the frats. boys know that going in and they are prepared for it but i do agree that these boys went too far. and you DONT pay for your friends bcuz trust me there were girls in my chapter that i didnt like.so in a sense i was paying for enemies as well.sororities and frats do work for a common goal.we encourage brotherhood and sisterhood among each other we support NUMEROUS charities and raise ALOT of money for them we have to keep our grades up to even stay in (therefore we arent idiots).all i have to say is dont judge something until you have been there.again yes they did go too far but dont ruin the rest of the greek community bcuz these guys got out of hand. it really is a good experience

If mommy and daddy or the government wasn't paying for their education, they would have to do as I did and get a job. Point....they would be so tired from working, going to class and studying that they wouldn't have time to play "games". I think fraternities are s waste of time and apparently money for a special building to house the idiots. Not just the offenders but also the recipient of the hazing. They will graduate and some of these idiots may be a nurse, doctor, police officer, lawyer ect. I sure wouldn't want someone taking care of me that was stupid and ignorant enough to be a part of this. Get a job, learn some respect and self control.

sounds like the pledge was stupid for a) trying to join and b) agreeing to be hazed

Everybody's thinking it, so I'll just say it. If the fraternity members were WHITE this wouldn't even be in the news. But all that aside, I do think there had to be repercussions from having hazed someone.

Shame on those little snots! And shame on colleges for allowing frat societys to continue this horrid tradition. It is beyond me why anyone would let another person torture them just to be accepted into their society...and why would you want to be "friends" with people you have pay or pledge to be their friends. This is stupidity at its finest!

These guys are not kids. They are old enough to know better than to assault someone. It is time for a reality check and to take legal responsibility for their actions.
