Massey Settles Shareholder Lawsuit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Massey Energy's management has agreed
to increase oversight of the coal company's environmental and
safety compliance to settle a shareholder lawsuit.

Among other things, a board committee will monitor safety
violations and accidents and scrutinize environmental problems
under a deal approved by a West Virginia judge Wednesday. Richmond,
Virginia-based Massey further agreed to appoint vice presidents for
safety and environmental practices.

The settlement ends a shareholder suit brought on Massey's
behalf by the Manville Personal Injury Trust against CEO Don
Blankenship and board members.
