Investigators say letter sent to retired state workers is part of scam

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Investigators have an alert about a scam they say is targeting retired state workers.

The state auditor's office says someone is sending letters to retirees, claiming they were overpaid, and they now owe thousands of dollars to the state.

The letter also urges them not to call the state auditor's office, and that a field agent would stop by their home to collect the money.

"What we believe is there are a number of these letters that have gone out, and what we want the public to know is that there's absolutely no truth to the letter," State Auditor Adam Edelen said. "Certainly, the benefits that our retirees are getting are the ones that they've earned."

Investigators also say the letter contains a forged signature of former state auditor Crit Luallen.
