Lexington Landlord Cleared Of Immigrant Harboring Charges

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A jury has cleared a Lexington landlord who prosecutors said rented to dozens of illegal immigrants.

The U.S. District Court jury in Lexington cleared William Jerry Hadden on 62 criminal counts on Friday.

Hadden wept after hearing the verdict, The Lexington Herald-Leader reported. He had rented to 60 undocumented immigrants at Cross Keys and Woodridge apartments.

Federal prosecutors had alleged that Hadden violated federal harboring laws.

Hadden says the verdict is a relief for landlords across the country.

Advocates for immigrants say it is not against the law to rent to illegal immigrants and Hadden wasn't required to check their immigration status.
