Pedestrian Struck, Killed Overnight Identified

LEXINGTON, KY -- Lexington Police are investigating the early morning death of a pedestrian struck by a car and killed crossing a street on the city's east side,

A news release from the Fayette County Coroner's Office identifies the victim as 43-year old Henry C. Cook. No address was given. The coroner says the cause of death was "blunt force trauma to the head."

A police news release says Cook was crossing Winchester Road at Strader Avenue shortly before 4 a.m. when a silver Oldsmobile driven by 41-year old Gambino August struck him.

August told police he could not avoid hitting Cook. Another motorist had swerved to avoid Cook seconds before August's car struck hiim.

The driver of the other vehicle told police it appeared that Cook was looking straight ahead at the time, not checking for traffic. Officers had cleared the scene and traffic had resumed by 6 a.m.

Fayette Coroner Gary Ginn says time of death was 4:40 a.m.

    I knew Henry years ago. His younger brother used to be active in scouts. It's really unfortunate.
